4.8/5 based on 340+ reviews on the web
Admire the interior and exterior splendor of Cathedral of the Assumption (Uspensky Sobor), perched on a hill and shining gold, white, and aquamarine over the town. Established in 1101, the cathedral that now stands on the site was completed in 1772, after the previous cathedral had been destroyed by an explosion of gunpowder stored in the church's basement (part of the ammunition depot during the 17th-century Siege of Smolensk). In the early 1100s Prince Vladimir Monomakh gave the cathedral an icon of Mary holding Jesus, which was stolen in the 1930s and never recovered. When you enter the church, examine the intricately detailed gold work, and seek out the shrine to Mary (Theotokos). • Beautiful Cathedral. Now inside a small repair, but it can't hurt to admire its beauty on the inside. View city is beyond praise. Behind the Cathedral a good shop with souvenirs (postcards, magnets, etc.). Place points of interest.

  • All recommend visiting this shrine, very beautiful and outside and inside. Situated on a hill that is not very suitable for people with disabilities.
