Kivach Reserve and Waterfalls, Republic of Karelia

(4.7/5 based on 200+ reviews on the web)
Home to a riotous array of plants, animals, and geological formations, Kivach Reserve and Waterfalls strives to protect an expanse of dense Northern European forest. Explore the reserve, which spans more than 10,800 hectares (26,687 acres), and observe the old-growth forest around you that includes swathes of pines more than two centuries old. Though this area was once shaped by several waterfalls, Soviet hydroelectric projects in 1936 reduced them to a single cascade. View the waterfall, which tumbles from a height of nearly 11 m (36 ft), and you'll be looking at the same waters that once inspired the poet Gavrila Derzhavin to pen one of Russia's most notable poems of the 18th century. To get a more in-depth look at the local ecosystem, join a guided excursion around the reserve's nature trails offered by the on-site museum. If you do so, be sure to wear comfortable shoes and proper outdoor gear. Put Kivach Reserve and Waterfalls on your schedule, and learn what else deserves a visit by using our Kondopoga trip itinerary builder.

  • Expect to see at least a small waterfall, so no same. This used to be called the Rapids on the river. Beautiful winter territory. All in the snow. But I think beautiful places in Karelia a lot and for the sake of this rivulet go there not worth it. A small cafe and expensive car parking no not pass. Toilets-horror. Shame. We live in the 21st century, and services at the level of the 19 century.

  • Went here in the winter and have not regretted. Winter route small-for half an hour on the force. There is still a small nature museum and Arboretum. Entrance fee, but parking is free.

  • Time was short, so we ordered a taxi. Kivach waterfall route-Marcial sources + a couple places that encouraged local to buy local products and tinctures to moroshke, cranberry, etc). Taxi cost 1200 rubles for the whole day. Quite the budgetary and, given that there were three of us. Walk around the reserve took great pleasure, despite the "bad weather", -23 degrees Celsius. The waterfall does not freeze at this temperature, and brandishes its power and beauty. I would like to see it in the summer. Hopefully we will be back:)
