Palais et Parc Catherine, Pushkin

Garden Nature / Park
Located just a short drive southeast of St. Petersburg, opulent Palais et Parc Catherine once served as the official summer residence of Russian royalty. Originally built on the orders of Empress Catherine I, the imposing palace underwent a massive reconstruction during the reign of her daughter Elizabeth, who spent exorbitant sums on grandiose Baroque projects. No expense spared, the building's facade and roof statues once contained over 100 kg (220 lbs) of gold. Now part of a World Heritage Site, the palace and its gardens represent the finest expression of Russian imperial architecture. The easiest way to explore this massive complex is with an audio guide, available at the on-site ticket office. Check online for opening hours and guided tour options.
