Trip Planner: Europe / Russia / Northwestern District / St. Petersburg / Petrodvortsovy District / Peterhof / Grand Peterhof Palace
Once the summer residence of Russian monarchs, Grand Peterhof Palace forms part of a sprawling complex of buildings and gardens recognized as a World Heritage Site. Built on the orders of Peter the Great, the 30-room palace underwent a series of renovations under Catherine the Great, who slightly toned down the glittering halls and elaborately decorated chambers. Seriously damaged during World War II, the renovated palace now offers guided tours of its galleries, filled with original art and furniture. The main hall notably houses twelve large paintings depicting scenes from a major naval battle of the Russo-Turkish War. Other highlights include Peter the Great's velvet throne and decorative objects imported from China. Check online for opening hours and guided tour options. The interior is overrated and you can't go without a guide. The ladies that work there are terribly rude.
Amazing place, incredible views.
The most wonderful castle and garden I ever seen!
Beautiful palace, terrible experience. Don't get me wrong, this place is ridiculously beautiful, and if you like palaces, you're in for a treat. But the visit was awful. First of all, the prices have doubled in the last year and there are no more student discounts, so it pretty much quadrupled for me. It was way more expensive than the Hermitage. Every single little part of this place has another ticket entrance, so even though it's beautiful, it feels like a tourist trap. You're being milked for your money here. During the visit, we kept being rushed to leave a room before a tour arrived on it, and we had to argue with the staff that we didn't take a tour exactly because we wanted to do it in our own pace. We let the group go in front of us hoping to have a little bit of peace to see the place properly. 5 minutes later another group catches up with us, and after seeing us in a couple rooms the guide started yelling at my friends, saying we were doing it on purpose to listen to the information for free. We let them go in front of us too, only to have another group catch up with us. They leave every few minutes, and it's very uncomfortable for the individual visitor. The rooms have alarms if you stay too long or touch the cords, which usually is pretty fair, but with large groups passing through, there's no way around it, which means you just hear an annoying alarm the whole time. You have to visit all the rooms in a certain order, which means there are no ways of scaping the crowds. So really beautiful, but I wouldn't pay that kind of money (again, more than the Hermitage) to have people push me around all day. Please have in mind that you also need to buy the ticket for the gardens, which adds up to 1900 rubles. The church, the other palaces in the garden and the audioguide are all sold separately.
