The Kremlin, Nizhny Novgorod

The region's cultural and political center, The Kremlin occupies a prominent hill in the historical city center of Nizhny Novgorod. Built in the 1500s as part of the country's eastern defenses, the impregnable fortress' 2 km (1.2 mi) long wall originally featured 13 watchtowers, 12 of which survive to this day. Once home to a permanent military garrison, this complex of historical buildings now houses mostly government offices. Inside the 12 m (40 ft) high walls, you can visit a small cathedral dedicated to the Archangel Michael and famous for containing the tomb of Kuzma Minin, a national hero who made his name defending the city against a 17th-century Polish invasion. You may end up a bit disappointed if you think you will see anything that can match with the Kremlin in Moscow. Most buildings are offices used by the government, with just one or two churches worth v...  more »

In Nizhny Novgorod, everyone should visit one of the main attractions of the Kremlin. It is important to know that the road to be difficult (you need to arm yourself with comfortable shoes). When climbing offers a very nice view of the city and river views! In the fortresses are worth ordering Guide, because without it is not particularly interesting. But still, I think that every tourist must visit this site!

Nice place for a relaxing walk, despite the large number of tourists. Beautiful manicured lawns, flowerbeds.

  • The main sightseeing of the city, center of its old history. Have a paid toilets and free drinking water spots. Exhibition of ww2 weapons included, with couple of museums and art-spaces. Mostly used for touristic and city management functions. There quiet inside!
  • I love this place, is nice to walk around and feel the history of the city. There is also a nice view from the top, up to the river. And is also nice to take a boat and watch the Kremlin from down the river
  • The kremlin is huge, with lot of buildings inside. Also you can get the great views to the Volga river here. The entrance is free, you should pay only for access to the museums
  • Spectacular views on the golden hour.
  • Nice fortress to see and walk in. For first time buy a ticket to walk inside fortresses wall. You can see downtown, two rivers and bridges outside and a fortress yard inside when you walk on the covered top of the wall. There are historic exhibitions in the corner towers.
