Worker and Kolkhoz Woman, Moscow

4.6
#69 of 2,721 in Things to do in Moscow
Featuring ubiquitous Soviet imagery, Worker and Kolkhoz Woman represents a well-preserved example of socialist realism. Originally designed for the Soviet pavilion at the 1937 Paris World's Fair, the statue was later relocated here. Stop by the sculpture, rising to a height of more than 25 m (82 ft), and get a glimpse of the symbolism that once featured so prominently in cities around the country. The stainless steel monument depicts a man and woman clutching their famous tools, representing the laborers and collective farm workers of the USSR, respectively. Note that the figures are arranged so that their equipment forms the classic hammer-and-sickle symbol of the Communist Soviet government. • Sculptural composition "worker and kolkhoz woman" was created by an outstanding sculptor i. Mukhina and engineer p. n. Lvovym as the tail of the SOVIET Pavilion by architect b. m. By for the world exhibition in Paris in 1937 g. .. Pavilion stood in the alley leading to the Eiffel Tower, opposite the Pavilion of Germany. After the exhibition pavilion and sculpture were dismantled and the parts of the sculptural group moved to Moscow, where the newly assembled and installed on the pedestal height 10 m, not repeating the composition of the Pavilion of the USSR. As such, she stood in front of the entrance to the all-Union Agricultural Exhibition held in 1939 g. .. In 2003, in connection with the emergency status of the sculptural composition it was disassembled. In 2009-2010 gg on the initiative and with funds of the Government of Moscow sculpture was restored and installed in a new Pavilion-pedestal, resembles the shape of the Pavilion of the USSR PA world exhibition in Paris. Today a new Pavilion renovated and faced with granite with individual elements made of chromed steel and works on modern architectural lighting in the evening. Architectural restoration Pavilion performed reliably on archival drawings, but for obvious reasons this expensive furnish of facades of the building in 30-ies of the last century could not be. Work is underway in the Interior of the pavilion where it will be deployed a layered composition. And why not visit Pavilion opened. The territory of VVC exhibition has expanded and the old main entrance Arch of the all-Union agricultural exhibition proved to be inside, away from the modern transport barrier of entry, as a monument of architecture (building architect Polyakova l. m. ). Very good, that the "dashing 90-s ' years" did not have time to carry her in "dangerous condition". Today the main entrance Arch too restored. About mind communication I attach photo:

  • An iconic Soviet symbol
  • Good pictures from iconic Moscow monument
  • Impressive statue made by Vera Mukhina. It has a great story too, from the first time it was exhibited at the 1937 Paris Expo, on top of the Soviet pavilion, in front of the Nazi Germany's one. Now it stands on a replica of the pavilion, at VDNKh. The surroundings need refurbishing, that's the only flaw.
  • Nostalgic feeling to see these two in real, and not in the trailer of an old movie. They are huge, thou you can't get very close, these are on the top of a building.
  • Kind of our in the middle of nowhere, but the statue is iconic, for people who appreciate Soviet culture.
