Tsar Bell and Tsar Cannon, Moscow

3.9/5 based on 280+ reviews on the web
While visiting the Moscow Kremlin, take the opportunity to admire Tsar Bell and Tsar Cannon, two towering examples of bronze casting taken to the extreme. The cannon dates back to the 16th century and the bell is around 150 years younger. To this day, they are the largest of their kind in the world. Technically a bombard, the highly ornate cannon weighs close to 40 tons, and even though legend claims it was never fired, there do seem to be some traces of use inside the barrel. The 200 ton bell, however, was definitely never used, because it cracked during the casting: you can still see the 11.5 ton broken-off piece next to it. Both attractions are so massive that you can easily take clear photos of them even when they're surrounded by a crowd of onlookers.
