Triumphal Arch, Moscow

(4.4/5 based on 75 reviews on the web)
The third and the oldest surviving Triumphal Arch in Moscow was built in 1829–34 on Tverskaya Gate Square to Joseph Bové's designs in order to commemorate Russia's victory over Napoleon. It replaced an earlier wooden structure built by the veterans of the Napoleonic Wars in 1814.The arch was built in brick and lined with ashlar. The columns and statues were of cast iron. A seiuga (six-horse chariot) was designed by Giovanni Vitali. The bilingual inscription in Russian and Latin ran as follows:The arch was dismantled in 1936 as part of Joseph Stalin's reconstruction of downtown Moscow. Vitali's sculptures were then put on exhibit at an architectural museum on the grounds of the former Donskoy Monastery. After the Second World War there were plans to rebuild the structure in front of the Belarussian Railway Station. The current arch was built to Bove's original designs in 1966–68 in the middle of Kutuzovsky Avenue, close to the Victory Park. An open space surrounding the arch is known as the Victory Square.

  • The arch itself is very beautiful. Formerly stood near the belorussky railway station. Now on Kutuzov Avenue. At one time, it was because it was narrowing the road and Cork respectively on Kutuzov Avenue. Now the road widened, but traffic jams everywhere now and not because of her)

  • Driving past this place periodically I don't watch any of the huge interest in him here forever deserted. Perhaps one of the reasons lies in the need to overcome the busy thoroughfare. Look at another Moscow new worth, but no more. Why new? But very simply, what we are seeing today is moved, changed, dopolnenennyj, established in the year 1968 in the new location. And here's the original version was created by the architect Joseph Bové in honour of the victory of the Russian people in the Patriotic War of 1812 onwards. Accordingly, the oldest monument in the square of Tver was Zastava to 1936 year when during the renovation of the place it was dismantled and removed. Part details preserved and was used to create the new version, the part was recreated on the drawings, something new has been added. More recently (to the 200 anniversary of the Patriotic War # 1) around the arches was landscaped and converted into a square, and the Arch of podrestavrirovana. In General my opinion: issued this monument looks already familiar, attractive and advantageous, and here is a place where people will gladly come and didn't bother (IMHO).

  • The arch itself is a great monument, beautiful. And in December, it became the center of the magical compositions-already that year her our mayors sign using light sculptures. Horses this year Santa Claus turned space surrounded by kutuzovskiy Prospekt in some absolutely fabulous islet: horses, sledges, evening everything glows! Very nicely done!

  • Similar to the Arc de Triomphe in Paris but celebrates the victory against Napoleon in the war of 1812. They call it the victory gate. Very interesting composition of the figures represented in around the monument. Find out with tours in Russia
