Tomb of Unknown Soldier, Moscow

#55 of 1,337 in Things to do in Moscow
Tomb of Unknown Soldier honors the Soviet soldiers killed in World War II. See the bronze sculpture of a soldier's helmet and the laurel branch on the banner. An eternal flame on the five-pointed star illuminates the inscription: "Your name is unknown, your deed is immortal." Porphyry blocks filled with soils from 40 hero cities line the path on the right, and the obelisk at the end of the path bears the city names. Watch the changing of the guard ceremony, which occurs every hour. You may see newlyweds leaving flowers at the memorial. • Each tourist can see this monument, which is located in behind the Kremlin or at the end of the Alexander garden and a commemoration of the victims of the second world war

  • The Russians are accustomed to that in every more or less big city you can come to the Memorial or monument to bow to the fallen in the great war and stand near a burning fire, symbolizing our eternal memory of those killed in the worst battles of the war. And everything in the USSR started this fire and the monument of the unknown soldier. Here and the truth buried an unknown soldier, the dust of which was raised in the ground and transported to the Kremlin wall. It is said that these were all funeral and shared grief. Memorial laconic, is pompous, but not memorized permanently. Wait by the fire. Honor the memory of our grandfathers and great-grandfathers.

  • An easy stop on your way around the Kremlin. Watch the change of the guards, then compare it to the one in Arlington :)
  • Every hour there is a shift of the guards which is spectacular! They kinda work like those 💂 💂 in London, standing completely static, but these guys really defend the flame.
  • The monument is just on the corner of Kremlin Palace outer walls. There are always soldiers waiting there and regularly soldiers replace. Be there at the replacement time.
  • Great 👍🏻 historical place in Moscow
  • Moving Memorial. Must see.

Where to stay in Moscow

The capital of Russia and a huge metropolis, Moscow offers a plethora of different types of accommodations. Many renowned hotel chains are represented in the city, and some of its hotels rank among the world's most luxurious and expensive. Those traveling on a more modest budget can choose among the boutique or Soviet-era hotels. There are also numerous hostels and short-term rental apartments throughout the city. When choosing a place to stay, especially if you're only planning for a short visit, always bear in mind the size of Moscow. Staying too far from the center might mean that the precious time you could spend on sightseeing will be wasted in traffic and transport.
