#55 of 2,721 in Things to do in Moscow
Tomb of Unknown Soldier honors the Soviet soldiers killed in World War II. See the bronze sculpture of a soldier's helmet and the laurel branch on the banner. An eternal flame on the five-pointed star illuminates the inscription: "Your name is unknown, your deed is immortal." Porphyry blocks filled with soils from 40 hero cities line the path on the right, and the obelisk at the end of the path bears the city names. Watch the changing of the guard ceremony, which occurs every hour. You may see newlyweds leaving flowers at the memorial. • Sometimes you wonder if people have any idea how to behave . This is a place where good behaviour is expected. Guards are watchful but seem amenable to photography. Part of the history of Russia.  more »

  • The memorial is in place outside the Kremlin, for the two times of the World War, the German-Russian war, all the countless Russian warriors, the day I arrived at the end of a heavy rain, after the rain a fresh and quiet, star-shaped flowers Longgang Rock engraved with the motto, the effect is not, but your work is forever long. There are guards on both sides of the monument Longgang, this time there is no chance to see the Longgang ceremony, I hope next time to see.

  • A nice relecting place. I only see the "unknown soldier" from the western perspective. Russia have millions of them, so it is nice to pay respects to those too.
  • In the changing of the guard you can feel the honor and respect presented to the fallen soldiers. Every hour on the hour the changing take place and it is free to watch. It is recommended to arrive 15 minutes before in order to observe it in the front row.
  • Striking in its simplicity, the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier is worth the visit when you're going to see Red Square. Beautiful to see how the Russians honour their dead. The Changing of the Guard is so beautiful; also without unneccessary drama, a fitting honour to those who paid the Price. Situated in the Alexandrovsky Garden, its tranquillity is befitting a monument of this nature.
  • Very good to watch. It happens fast so if you want to see it, you must be there before each hour.
  • On the hour guard changes. Good to see. Get there a bit early to grab a front row in order to catch the scene.
