Easily recognizable by its ornate, red-brick building, the museum houses millions of artifacts that range from prehistoric times to the beginnings of the modern age. Inspect the rich archeological collection, see the rare medieval scrolls and manuscripts, weapons, armor, clothes, and costumes from various periods, as well as the vast selection of impressive artwork and much more. Many of the displayed items have a very important place in Russian history. • All of the rooms are interesting in their own way, I liked the last rooms of 19 century Russian style. And of course, the exhibition, representing the products of gold. They too are worthy of attention.

  • Stayed for one day in Moscow. Traditionally visit tourist attractions. This time, the choice fell on the GMM. Have not regretted. 3 floors of the Museum are dedicated to different historical periods and cultures. unique collection of discoveries during excavations in different periods of history paintings, artwork, household items, jewelry, money, coins, figurines. explore exhibits impossible for several hours. But even bypassing the halls without a guide, you can learn much. The halls are equipped with screens, where it is possible to familiarize in detail with exhibits or history. Photography is allowed without Flash.

  • Lots of beautiful architecture and exhibits, but dull content. I haven’t learned one meaningful thing in the audio tour. Clothes and coins and other things are described in painful detail, but an ANALYSIS or deeper understanding of political or economic developments is missing completely. How did Catherine the Great or Lenin come to power? How come I still don’t know that after visiting this museum? Also, way too expensive for what it is!!
  • The State Historical Museum is the beautiful red-brick building facing St. Basil's Cathedral from the northeast end of the Red Square in Moscow. Opening Hours 10-6pm daily with extended hours to 9pm (Friday and Saturday). Constructed in 1883 in Russian Revival Style, this is one of the most attractive buildings on the Red Square. The deep red colour of the building complements the nearby Kremlin and helps give support to the name of this square. You can enjoy building architecture from all sides. It is impressive from within the Red Square and on the opposite Manezhnaya Square as well. In addition to simply viewing this attractive historical building, a visit inside to the see the History Museum (400 RUB) is worth a couple hours of time as well. Here you will see several floors of halls and gallery rooms displaying historical items and artefacts from prehistoric to present times. There is greater emphasis on recent centuries and the expansion of the Russian State. Rooms are cover three floors and museum items are spaced out and well presented in a chronological manner, making it easy to make your way through the collection. Unfortunately, most item displays are in Russian only so it is challenging to know exactly what you are looking at much of the time. Perhaps in time they will update information displays to include English. Overall, we enjoyed our time at the State Historical Museum and considered it worth the two hours we spent here. There are some interesting items on display and even with many displays being Russian only, you can get a decent feel for early and recent Russian history during your visit. Obviously, viewing the exterior architecture of the building is something everyone will enjoy, regardless if you intend to spend time within the museum or not.
  • Lack of English description, but there are English speaking staffs at the entrance. I paid for an English tour with a friendly old lady named Helen but sadly the tour does not cover the entire museum. Still a pretty good experience though.
  • a very so so experience. small museum with some good but mostly ok stuffs. interesting if u know the history but audio guide was not applicable for half of the show... would not wanna go again but if u like history its ok
  • The museum in itself is exactly what you would expect as a historical museum. My only issue is that almost nothing was translated. You are left guessing.
