When touring Red Square, don't miss the chance to take a comprehensive tour of the history of the Russian land and people at State Historical Museum. Easily recognizable by its ornate, red-brick building, the museum houses millions of artifacts that range from prehistoric times to the beginnings of the modern age. Inspect the rich archeological collection, see the rare medieval scrolls and manuscripts, weapons, armor, clothes, and costumes from various periods, as well as the vast selection of impressive artwork and much more. Many of the displayed items have a very important place in Russian history. In addition to the permanent display, the museum regularly hosts numerous temporary exhibits--find the schedule for these online. Getting an audio guide is the best way to truly appreciate the collection for those who don't speak Russian.
