St. Basil's Cathedral, Moscow

Church Tourist Spot
The symbol of Moscow for over four centuries, centrally located St. Basil's Cathedral seems like an image plucked out of a book of fairy tales. Constructed in the 1550s on the orders of Ivan the Terrible, the cathedral features vividly colored onion-shaped domes and an asymmetrical design unusual in traditional Russian architecture. Four of the eight side churches surrounding the main cathedral structure sit on raised platforms, designed to make them appear suspended in air. The massive structure contains a maze of vaulted corridors and vertical cylinders, the largest of which is 46 m (150 ft) tall. Walk inside to see the elaborate Baroque iconostasis, decorated with gilded cornices and corbel arches. Where to stay in Moscow

The capital of Russia and a huge metropolis, Moscow offers a plethora of different types of accommodations. Many renowned hotel chains are represented in the city, and some of its hotels rank among the world's most luxurious and expensive. Those traveling on a more modest budget can choose among the boutique or Soviet-era hotels. There are also numerous hostels and short-term rental apartments throughout the city. When choosing a place to stay, especially if you're only planning for a short visit, always bear in mind the size of Moscow. Staying too far from the center might mean that the precious time you could spend on sightseeing will be wasted in traffic and transport.

  • When you think of Russia, this is what comes to mind - it does not disappoint. It seriously is such a beautiful outside sight to see. Inside was not as good as some of the other cathedrals in Russia b...  more »
  • The outer structure itself is attractive and amazing. It is nice to visit the area at night because lights around and within adds perfection to the view.  more »
  • As the title says. Well maintained. We didn't go inside so I can't say if that's worth the effort. Should go there  more »

  • Great place for nice photos with the cathedral in the background. Place closes at 5pm. Ticket booth closes much earlier. Was there at 4 and we were about the last ones to be let in. With the setting sun and decreasing tourist numbers visiting at this hour, its much easier to get nice a photo opportunity
  • Most famous landmark of Russia. Cathedral is in the red square and next to the Kremlin palace. Smaller than I expected but looks amazing. Inside is dark and not as shiny as I expected. But if you have money and time don't miss.
  • One word. Just gorgeous. I like the type of architecture and the atmosphere.
  • Awesome architecture inside and outside. Much smaller than it looks in the photos but no less amazing. Beautiful view as well. Just a little warning there are no metro stations nearby so be prepared to walk quite a bit to get there (not a problem by me) but its fine as you will see some other great views.
  • A must see place during sightseeing Moscow. Amazing architecture.
