Peter The Great Monument, Moscow

#212 of 2,721 in Things to do in Moscow
Rising above the Moskva River in the center the city, Peter The Great Monument pays homage to one of Russia's most legendary figures. Standing at a height of 98 m (322 ft), the statue generated controversy not just for its design but for the fact that Peter himself had a well-documented hatred of Moscow. Judge for yourself by stopping at the towering metal statue, just a stone's throw from the Kremlin. Look up to see an oversized Peter astride a mound of sailing ships, clutching a golden scroll in his hand--a tribute to his foundation and development of the Russian Navy. Bring your camera to capture this prominent component of the skyline. Plan to see Peter The Great Monument and other attractions that appeal to you using our Moscow tour builder website .

  • One of the most unworthy of this city. The large and useless Columbus statue recycled into Peter the great to honor the years ' 90 Muscovites, perhaps the lowest period of the history of this country since the days of the serfs. Between the end of the USSR and the emergence of Russia, Yeltsin will not be remembered for using public money wisely. Another illustrious example nearby rebuilt Church of Christ the Savior. Opposed also by the people, it would be good if the useless and ugly monument leave as soon as possible the Moskva.

  • Returning from the Cathedral of Christ the Saviour, we pass a bridge and saw it. By far, there are three caravels and the figure of someone like Columbus. We ask that would make Colon in Moscow. Reading a bit, we anoticiamos that there are two versions. One says that it's Pedro el Grande and that was held on the anniversary of the Russian Navy. And the other, which was Cristóbal Colón and which was performed to bring it to the Universal Exposition in Seville in 1992. The latter seems more credible. She is attractive because of its size and because of the location in the Moskva River.

  • I don't know why many scolded him, but it looks cool. I would even say grandly. If it still decided to remove, Moscow would have lost one of their characters. The place chosen as cannot be correct.

  • Very big and impressive monument of king peter 1. The first king of Russia as called. It is a nice place all day long in summers and even in winters its too good when river freezes and the beauty goes on a different level.
  • I honestly think this is the ugliest statue in Europe. It ruins the Moscow skyline with its sheer ridiculous proportions, its worth in scrap metal would exceed its artistic value 1,000,000 to 1. I would say avoid it but its been plonked in the city centre so you´ll have a job. Í would give 0 stars but google wont let me post until I give one.
  • The statue itself is out of proportion, but interesting to look at and see, the park where it is located is actually a good place to relax
  • Nice and famous moments in Mossco . I had visited in 2012 and I hope to be back again in the future ....
  • The biggest monument ever seen. Wonderful conception. Perfect place for monument. Great view from every side, I recommend from Gorki park.
