Specialty Museum Museum
Visit the strange world that surrounded and influenced one of Russia's most famous 20th-century writers at Mikhail Bulgakov's Museum. Situated on the fourth floor of the communal apartment block where Bulgakov had a room after coming to Moscow, the museum melds the authentic atmosphere of the time with the supernatural scenery of his novels, most notably "The Master and Margarita," where the writer immortalized his quarters as "The Odd Flat." The museum is furnished and decorated to take you back to the time when the writer lived there, featuring various personal belongings as well as those of family and contemporaries. The museum regularly organizes theater performances of Bulgakov's plays, novels, and stories. The ground floor of the same building features another museum dedicated to Bulgakov as well, so consider combining the two for the full experience. Mikhail Bulgakov's Museum is just one of the many highlights you can arrange to see using our world travel planner, Moscow Edition.

Where to stay in Moscow

The capital of Russia and a huge metropolis, Moscow offers a plethora of different types of accommodations. Many renowned hotel chains are represented in the city, and some of its hotels rank among the world's most luxurious and expensive. Those traveling on a more modest budget can choose among the boutique or Soviet-era hotels. There are also numerous hostels and short-term rental apartments throughout the city. When choosing a place to stay, especially if you're only planning for a short visit, always bear in mind the size of Moscow. Staying too far from the center might mean that the precious time you could spend on sightseeing will be wasted in traffic and transport.

  • The museum seemed to be interesting, but there was unfortunately no information in English. We thus didn't understand anything. The lay-out of the rooms were good. We could afterwards visit Bulgakov's...  more »

  • Great place, especially for people that like reading Bulgakovs stories, novels etc. Museum is free to visit, but I'd you want to listen excursion - about 300 rub/person
  • Very well organized museums on the life and works of the great XX century Russian novelist Mikhail Bulgakov. Don't miss the Kvartira 50, where the writer and his third wife lived with two other couples in a stalinist communal apartment.
  • Small but very cozy museum about the writer Bulgakov. There is also a theater and movie theater on the premises. There are a lot of events like lectures and concerts, checking in advance if English translation is possible is a must. There is also an option to do a midnight tour of Moscow visiting the places mentioned in Master and Margareta which is very much worth the effort.
  • Here you can see the typewriter of Stalin's critical civilian, who also wrote his favourite play. And some more exhibits to remember the Master.
  • Fascinating place for inspiration
