Krutitskoe Podvorye, Moscow
(4.9/5 based on 380+ reviews on the web)
Still functioning as an ecclesiastic estate of the Russian Orthodox Church, Krutitskoe Podvorye has survived dramatic periods of upheaval and neglect over the centuries. Passing from the church to the military in the late 1700s, the complex was used as a storehouse, barracks, and prison; it functioned as a museum during the late Soviet period, and finally fully returned to the church in 1996. The complex contains two churches, the metropolitan's (bishop's) residence and gallery, a riverside dormitory, and a set of 19th-century wooden houses. Don't miss the intricately detailed ornamentation and holy icons of the Dormition Cathedral (Cathedral of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin), which houses an upper and a lower chapel, both of which are lavishly decorated in blue and gold. • Not great, but definitely worth a visit. Few visitors, as a little remote. But still easily accessible by Metro.

  • A unique place in Moscow where not seen Moscow modern-total immersion in the atmosphere of antiquity and history here, 18-19 centuries literally surrounds you. Actually-all very well cared for, a sense of "neglect" (as they say) is a carefully restored old buildings and cobblestone streets, rather than the current tiled modern replica. Moreover, some modern moments created for convenience (step task for example) or in Soviet times (former guardhouse, Circo)-do not hide bashfully and underline concern for today's visitors or historical situation. And yet-it's a rare monastery in Moscow, where you are free to go, walk, climb.

  • It is a pity that all in a State of neglect, but even that is already worth a visit. In the vicinity of the center of Moscow "wild" places very little.
