4.9/5 based on 360+ reviews on the web
Still functioning as an ecclesiastic estate of the Russian Orthodox Church, Krutitskoe Podvorye has survived dramatic periods of upheaval and neglect over the centuries. Passing from the church to the military in the late 1700s, the complex was used as a storehouse, barracks, and prison; it functioned as a museum during the late Soviet period, and finally fully returned to the church in 1996. The complex contains two churches, the metropolitan's (bishop's) residence and gallery, a riverside dormitory, and a set of 19th-century wooden houses. Don't miss the intricately detailed ornamentation and holy icons of the Dormition Cathedral (Cathedral of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin), which houses an upper and a lower chapel, both of which are lavishly decorated in blue and gold. • If you walk around Moscow in the area or visiting Proletarian novospassky monastery, be sure to visit the Church in nikitniki, located just a 5-minute walk from the monastery. The unusual atmosphere of this surprisingly little visited site, pleases its coziness, beauty and originality. This suburb, where time stopped somewhere in the 18-19 century. Previously, there was a monastery, now there is one functioning Church assumption Cathedral and many of the buildings currently under restoration. Among them, Tower and the holy gates, which are lined with unique multi-colour tiles by Stepan Ivanov's work (used to two thousand tiles) ... Restavraciennye more than 20 years under the direction of architect Baranovsky. I bow to him for this great work. The place is truly unique. Near noisy and bustling Moscow and here is quiet and peaceful, the main thing-the very life of slobodka. Highly recommend a visit, you won't regret it!

  • This is a very old terracotta church and building that at first glance looks like ruins. It does however give it a certain charm but do not go out of your way to visit it.
