GUM Department Store (Glavny Universalny Magazin), Moscow

4.4
#1 of 614 in Shopping in Russia
Blending modern shopping with history and architecture, GUM Department Store (Glavny Universalny Magazin) remains the country's largest shopping mall. Constructed during the 1890s, the trapezoidal building combines elements of traditional Russian and 19th-century English architecture, including a steel framework and glass roof. A major feat of engineering, the structure gets most of its illumination from giant arched skylights, each one containing more than 20,000 panes of glass. The centrally located mall houses about 200 upscale boutiques, selling internationally known clothing brands, household goods, jewelry, sports equipment, cosmetics, and souvenirs. The building's ground level offers access to cafes, restrooms, and ATMs. Put GUM Department Store (Glavny Universalny Magazin) on your schedule, and learn what else deserves a visit by using our Moscow tour itinerary planner.

  • This is not the kind of store where go shopping, It doesn't look like any Galeries Lafayette, nor at the Herods. This is a significant addition to the red square to the center of Moscow. At different times different was GUM. Five years ago there was more cheerful songs do. Now appeared some RAID North of Paphos. Deliberately haughtily and rants. From market economy track seems not at all left. In General, however, smart and funny. Recommend to gawk at it.

  • As I like coming in Qum. Be sure to stroll through the "streets" of the Moscow department store. You will enjoy. Now all in unusually gentle and magnificent white-pink flowers. You will see amazing exhibition of embroidery silk. I like how you use playground Guma: from Christmas Christmas tree to a sunny spring Sakura trees. Sit on a bench under the fir tree, eat "gumovskoe" ice cream. Give yourself a good mood and share them with my family, friends, and just good people!

  • Great mall right at Red Square. Basically it’s a shopping complex where all the big brands are present. Once you get the hang of the place, it’s quite easy to navigate the place. For first timers, staircases are at both ends and the middle. So if you need to get between levels, check where you are. You can use Bosco Cafe as a point to indicate the middle of the mall. There is a supermarket at the 3rd parallel but mainly carry imported brands and items. If you are looking for local or simple stuff, this supermarket is not the right place.
  • This is a gorgeous mall. I love that there are fresh flowers everywhere. The classical music that plays is a bonus! There are brands for everyone, and I like that there is actually a lot of high-end stores. I can't wait to come back next June!
  • Perfect place for shopping in the heart of the capital. A lot of exclusive brands and boutiques. love to be there. It's amazing at night!
  • Visually stunning shopping mall right on the red square. It's worth walking through and shopping if you can afford spending in the trendy shops.
  • Peek back in time a bit... even though it's all updated... as this was one of those shining examples of the soviet success. GUM was/is a popular visit for locals and tourists (adjacent to Red Square) alike. Fairly spendy shopping here. One place is the soviet era restaurant located inside. Requires quite a wait but from what I am told by locals, it is very true to form for soviet era on food and service set up.

Where to stay in Moscow

The capital of Russia and a huge metropolis, Moscow offers a plethora of different types of accommodations. Many renowned hotel chains are represented in the city, and some of its hotels rank among the world's most luxurious and expensive. Those traveling on a more modest budget can choose among the boutique or Soviet-era hotels. There are also numerous hostels and short-term rental apartments throughout the city. When choosing a place to stay, especially if you're only planning for a short visit, always bear in mind the size of Moscow. Staying too far from the center might mean that the precious time you could spend on sightseeing will be wasted in traffic and transport.
