Gorky Central Park of Culture and Leisure, Moscow

4.6
#1 of 80 in Parks in Moscow
Celebrated in countless books, movies, and songs, Gorky Central Park of Culture and Leisure draws visitors with its cafes, contemporary public art projects, food stands, and sports facilities. Once packed with theme park attractions, the park underwent a major renovation in 2011, losing most of its old-fashioned amusement rides to become an eco-friendly recreational zone. Designed by avant-garde architect Konstantin Melnikov and opened in 1928, the sprawling park now features an open-air theater and free Wi-Fi throughout its 120 hectares (300 acres). Nearly 40,000 visitors come every day to bike, walk, jog, and rollerblade. During the colder months, the park becomes a winter wonderland, its frozen ponds turning into giant skating rinks. Avoid traffic congestion by coming on foot or by public bus. • Gorky Park is a regular spot for our family. It was renovated a few years ago and now has something for everyone. We have young kids who like to ride their scooters around the many paths or play in th...  more »
  • Went to the Park to attend summer theater and was sorry. Cinema some poky (compare with the same bank). Uncomfortable to sit on. In Friday evening throughout the Park was so much people. The park itself is comfortless. Toilets for places on this scale extremely small! and they all just in svinskom condition! This is the main disadvantage. Returning after a movie late at night was going to go in the side exit that is closer to m. Oktyabrskaya, but it was closed, although the day it opened. As a result, had to crawl very far and do hook. Uncomfortable! From the good-many restaurants, but expensive.

  • A large, beautiful park. Great place for a stroll, you can come for the whole day with family. There are separate playgrounds for sports — football, volleyball, table tennis. Separate bike paths, asphalt quality, in-line skates you can ride safely. Light and music fountain for amateurs. Liked sunbeds on the lawn. Gorky Park has left the best impressions. Products lotoshnikov, as usual, very expensive drink-eat better take with you.

  • Excellent place to visit. Kids friendly. Always some kind of events taking place. Very lively. Nice to skateboard by the side of Moscow river. Toilets available. Easy to go by public transport mainly metro. take your kids, some food, a bed sheet kind of thing and stay there whole day. You will love it.
  • Amazing park with loads of activities for any taste and any age. Beautiful landscape, some nice heritage buildings and sights, pleasant presence of river and hills, and all this very well tight-up together into one continuous promenade with a place for any kind of activities: leisure, sports, music, arts, eating out. Very well designed and well kept. Definitely worth visiting while in Moscow on a sunny day.
  • From morning to late in the evening, Gorky Park is definitely worth an entire day of any Moscow vacation. Dancing fountains, food carts and exquisite sculptures can easily fill an afternoon, while a stroll along the river with dancing, a boat tour and a fine meal top off the night. Gorky Park is probably the cultural epicenter of modern day Moscow.
  • Awesome! Need an entire day to explore it. If only I lived in Moscow, I'd be there very often! :) Great for a walk on a sunny day, there are tons of activities, exhibitions, gardens etc.
  • Very big park with tons of amusements and space for walk or riding your favourite bike, skate, etc. Also there are: ice-skating park at winter open air cinema at summer. A lot of events happening here almost every weekend. Better to visit during the week, to avoid weekend crowds.

Where to stay in Moscow

The capital of Russia and a huge metropolis, Moscow offers a plethora of different types of accommodations. Many renowned hotel chains are represented in the city, and some of its hotels rank among the world's most luxurious and expensive. Those traveling on a more modest budget can choose among the boutique or Soviet-era hotels. There are also numerous hostels and short-term rental apartments throughout the city. When choosing a place to stay, especially if you're only planning for a short visit, always bear in mind the size of Moscow. Staying too far from the center might mean that the precious time you could spend on sightseeing will be wasted in traffic and transport.
