  • Every summer visit monastery: a wonderful, quiet, truly blessed place in the center of Moscow. Hope this year to see the results of a long restoration (according to plan she had to complete in December 2016 onwards). Alas: restoration is not finished. In the part of the necropolis, where she completed-very good. But in the rest of the work. And yet: very upsetting that a large part of the territory is closed (and apparently will be closed). It is clear that the monastery-acting but beautiful temples were not available for "ordinary mortals".

  • Founded in 1591/92 to commemorate the defeat of the Tatars, who were trying to invade the city, this monastery looks like a true fortification and has a turbulent history and fascinating. The original Cathedral, which is now called the old cathedral, was completed in 1593 and was a fine example of typical Muscovite Baroque, painted in red and white. The great cathedral was built only about a century later, in 1684, at the behest of Princess Sophia, in a different style, probably because it was built from source manpower Ukraine, whereby the four lateral domes were meant to represent the four corners of the Earth. A few years later the whole city wall was restored in Baroque style, with the addition of 12 crenellated towers many similar to those of Novodevichy Convent. The bolshevichi closed the convent in order to transform it into a Museum in 1929 and only in 1946 he resumed religious functions in the old cathedral. Finally in 1992 the entire monastery regained the title of monastery in all respects. To date (2017) there are still many renovations and some religious buildings are not accessible to the public, which however does not detract from the value and beauty to this huge architectural complex. A special mention to the cemetery that is part of the complex. Here are buried many noble families and some famous names of literature, artists, philosophers and architects. One for all, the dissident writer Soldzenitsyn.

  • Who was not in the Don monastery advise posetitego, but better. Place interesting. Donskoy monastery icons of the mother of God was founded in the year 1593. Great Cathedral now is simply gorgeous. Passed an excellent restoration of a large iconostasis, such beauty I have not seen the small Cathedral too interesting there when entering the Cathedral zahronenija monastery Abbot, in the Cathedral a small iconostasis and sex too zahronenija famous people. And there is also mirovarnja. For small Cathedral you can see the 16 century gravestones. There are graves of the Georgian Kings David, the poet Chaadaeva odoevskogo, historian Kljuchevskogo, the architect of Beauvais, and a. Solzhenitsyn is buried on the territory of the monastery there is a shop with delicious pastries and drinks. All this is prepared here: try bread and leavened bread leaven grey.

  • One of the oldest Orthodox monasteries located near Metro «Sportivnaya». The monastery is surrounded by a cosy square, powerful thick walls and patterned towers. Founded in the year 1591 in place, where there was a Russian military camp. It is directly subordinate to the Patriarch of Moscow and all Russia. In the Don monastery is the oldest known cemetery, where many famous people are buried. It is interesting to wander between scattered on the territory of the necropolis, with tombs of familiar names. Here are the stunning beauty of the high relief of the destroyed Cathedral of Christ the Savior.

  • The monastery stands out in that it (partially) preserved necropolis of 16-19 centuries. I.e. historic Moscow cemetery for notables. In particular, there buried Uncle Pushkin (the poet was at the funeral), Smirnova-Rosset, Chaadaev and many other prominent people of the 18-19 centuries. There is a book La Cherejskogo "Pushkin and his Entourage". There lists a variety of curriculum vitae. With him is interesting to wander through the necropolis. One of the photos shows hosted State Cemetery in Soviet times. In 80-ies it was my favorite place in Moscow. Yes, the devastation-but felt "spirit of place", a special mood. Unfortunately then there began a big change. One of the Priors was fond of patriotic ideas. This is good-but I'm not sure why it was placed among the graves samples of military equipment (see photo). While rigidly confined to the days when it was possible to enter the monastery. Last year I visited the monastery in the midst of reconstruction. He actually shot to smithereens. The saddest thing is that this is the case the State has deteriorated sharply in the necropolis. As-t ...

Where to stay in Moscow

The capital of Russia and a huge metropolis, Moscow offers a plethora of different types of accommodations. Many renowned hotel chains are represented in the city, and some of its hotels rank among the world's most luxurious and expensive. Those traveling on a more modest budget can choose among the boutique or Soviet-era hotels. There are also numerous hostels and short-term rental apartments throughout the city. When choosing a place to stay, especially if you're only planning for a short visit, always bear in mind the size of Moscow. Staying too far from the center might mean that the precious time you could spend on sightseeing will be wasted in traffic and transport.
