Bolotnaya ploshchad (Bog square), Moscow

3.9
Bolotnaya Square is a square in the center of Moscow, in Yakimanka District, south of the Moscow Kremlin, between the Moskva River and the Vodootvodny Canal . The square is bounded by Bolotnaya Embankment of the canal to the south, by Serafimovicha Street and the House on the Embankment to the west, and by Bolotnaya Street to the north and to the east. The square had the name of Repin Square, commemorating Russian artist Ilya Repin, between 1962 and 1994. The square is built as a pedestrian open space.HistoryThe name of the area, Boloto (literally meaning the marsh), was known since the 14th century, when it was located in the meadows on the low bank of the Moscow River and frequently flooded. It belonged to the district of Zamoskvorechye, south of the river, and became an urban area much later than the left bank of the river, where the Kremlin is located. The square was frequently used for public executions, notably, the famous rebel Stepan Razin in 1671 and Yemelyan Pugachev, a leader of a peasant rebellion, who was executed there in 1775. It was also the last public execution in the square. The area was flooded on a regular basis until the 1780s, when the Vodootvodny Canal was dug to normalize the situation. In the 19th century, the area was built up by the addition houses and warehouses of local merchants, some of which are still intact.

  • Authorized and unauthorized protests, RIOT POLICE with "bobikami", as all this does not tally with a fountain, flowerbeds, green bushes, shady trees, with a monument to Repin and compositions "child victims of adult vices! Bolotnaya square and Repinskij square created for rest and walking here, so let's take a walk and relax!

  • The first time I was in the Swamp. The usual tourist routes its bypass, and hence to the Kremlin in a straight three-hundred meters. We marched from the Tretyakov through Luzhkov bridge and marsh to the Kremlin. The area has left a good impression, but not unambiguous. Monument to m. chemiakin Children-victims of adult vices "in my opinion falls out of the overall composition. You can find more decent place! And Luzhkov bridge, together with the river and monument Repin compositionally look just fine! The good thing is that in the center of Moscow has remained such a large area.

  • Bolotnaya square I now more associated with political unrest. Everyone has heard. But it is a great urban space, where festivals and holidays city.

Where to stay in Moscow

The capital of Russia and a huge metropolis, Moscow offers a plethora of different types of accommodations. Many renowned hotel chains are represented in the city, and some of its hotels rank among the world's most luxurious and expensive. Those traveling on a more modest budget can choose among the boutique or Soviet-era hotels. There are also numerous hostels and short-term rental apartments throughout the city. When choosing a place to stay, especially if you're only planning for a short visit, always bear in mind the size of Moscow. Staying too far from the center might mean that the precious time you could spend on sightseeing will be wasted in traffic and transport.
