Baikal Limnological Museum, Listvyanka

The museum features 11 aquariums with 20 types of fish, as well as endemic species of mammals, such as by the Baikal seal. See the maps of the area, models of the lake bed, a collection of minerals, and samples of recent bottom sediments. You can watch a 20-minute film with shots made at the deepest point of the lake: 1,637 m (5,371 ft) below sea level. Indigenous trees, lianas, and other plants, including some medicinal herbs, grow in an arboretum next to the museum.   • I was not impressed by the museum. The staff were less than friendly, it was not well heated and the animals there (particularly the seals) looked bored and sad in their tiny tanks. Very few displays ...  more »
