Konevsky Monastery, Konevets Island
(4.6/5 based on 25 reviews on the web)
Konevsky Monastery is a Russian Orthodox monastery that occupies the Konevets Island in the western part of the Lake Ladoga, Leningrad Oblast, Russian Federation. It is often regarded as the twin monastery with the Valaam Monastery, also located on an island group in the same lake.Medieval originsKonevets Island (Konevitsa or Kononsaari) has the maximum length of 5 km; its average width is 2 km. The island is separated from the mainland by a 5-km-wide strait. In the Middle Ages, the island was considered holy by the Finnish tribes who particularly revered a huge boulder in the shape of a horse's skull, weighing more than 750 tons. This boulder is known as Kon’-Kamen’ (literally, "Steed-Stone") and gives its name to the island. The monastery was founded around 1393 by St. Arseny Konevsky, who wished to convert pagan Karelians to Christianity. The location of the monastery was changed several times, in order to avert floods. The church of the Nativity of the Theotokos was founded by St. Arseny in 1428; it was at this church that the monastery's main shrine was placed. It was a miraculous image of Mother of God, brought by St. Arseny from Mount Athos and representing Christ playing with a dove nestling, symbolizing spiritual purity.

  • Lake Ladoga is konevets island. We were not there with Pilgrim trip and excursion, traveling on the boat on the expanses of the country. About the island and the monastery almost knew nothing, all the information is emphasized from the story guide. The first impression is a neglect of the island and the territory of the monastery. Before that we visited, Unzha Raithu, Valaam monasteries. There's a nice neat hit literally every piece of land. On the Konevets monastery even within many places overgrown with weeds. Probably here don't have enough workers, which just might ennoble least monastery territory. Further our way passed through the forest to the famous Horse-stone. According to the legend surrounding him performed their rites of pagans and in General in this huge kamenjuke was exorcised. But the venerable Arsenius using icons of the most Holy Theotokos, brought them from Mount Athos, as well as putting stones with holy water, exorcised the evil force. On a stone chapel was built. Stones himself and Chapel standing on it to produce a strong impression. I wanted to stay there longer, but the craft was already waiting for us. The Bank went to the edge of the forest. In the forest a lot of berries-Blueberry bushes are literally littered the ground. Ended our short excursion on the island. Gladly returned there again. Island bribed us with its silence, bezljudnost'ju. The truth is that often there are traces of a military base. Perhaps this should be a place for a monastery. If someone specifically interested in the monastery, then there is a farmstead in St. Petersburg (as branch) monastery, it's PR. Country q 7.

  • We visited the island with pilgrimage Group (best option for us). At the outset, it should be noted that both the Konevsky monastery, and his pilgrimage service quite fiddly and not functional site: any useful information cannot be obtained, the reviewers add unrealistic (despite the presence of the corresponding tab), and the universal response to all attempts to open the desired page is a message that the site is being finalized. And so always. When this date of travel are constantly changing and often appear for a week, causing potential pilgrims going before, remain in the belief that travel there. Order online visit for two days (Konevets) is also impossible: on the page of the two-day trip provides only application form for one day. But what is in this case a day trip? This departure at 7.00-8.00 with the arrival on the island around noon, with travelers sometimes unreasonably long wait for the ship in the Bay of Vladimir. Return with newly Konevets is bound to send through Ladoga, but pilgrimage service usually appoints 16.00-16.30, while in the evening, on weekends there are two flights: second-18.00-18.30. Thus directly stay on the island, in the best case, it takes 4-5 hours, it is necessary to subtract lunch time (by the way, the pilgrimage service leaves no opportunity to forgo dinner, which, incidentally, is worth 350 rub.). To the question, why not draw away from the island at 6 p.m., thus giving the opportunity to even be 2:00 pilgrims in this attractive location, it should be a little sensible explanation that otherwise-in case of contact with corks-they don't have time on the subway. However, an elementary calculation shows groundlessness of this argument, and, at least in the Saturday service could change the time sent with Isles at 18.00. This does not occur, and all of the service's actions clearly aimed at profiting from wanting to visit on the island: the cost of a day trip-2300; the two-day-4300.

  • Hit on the konevets island during the tour to Balaam. Very comfortable and warm place, interesting excursion and beautiful temple. When they returned from there were very encouraged by trip, and steel on the Internet reading about this island and came across a mixed information that there may have radioactive contamination. Information on the Internet on this topic a lot (who are interested-look; in Yandex when typing the word "Konevets"-third line shows "Konevets radiation"), and God forbid that it (radiation) was no longer there, life there is and people live, and indeed the place warm and bright! We certainly did not like that the hike was not a Word. But people there have such a magical monastery, believe that all there good!
