See the jewels of Karelian wood architecture and learn about local traditions at Kizhi State Open-Air Museum of History, Architecture and Ethnography. Located on Kizhi Island on Lake Onega, the open-air museum houses more than 80 historic structures, such as churches, houses, and mills. The highlight of the collection is the Kizhi pogost, a World Heritage Site. It includes the famous Church of the Transfiguration with its 22 domes, built completely from wood and without a single nail. Guided tours are available for groups of 10 or more visitors, while for individual guests there are multilingual audio guides. The museum is open year-round and, depending on the season, you can reach it by boat, hydrofoil, or helicopter from the nearby coastal towns. Camping on the island is not allowed. Our Kizhi trip generator makes visiting Kizhi State Open-Air Museum of History, Architecture and Ethnography and other Kizhi attractions simple, and helps you make a travel plan personal to you.
