Explore the largest active volcano in the Northern Hemisphere at Kamchatka Peninsula. The river and surrounding valleys of the peninsula are bordered by volcanic belts, including approximately 160 volcanoes, 29 of which are active. The peninsula is known for its volcanic calderas, range of plant forms, variable climates including temperate and subarctic, and for the number and size of brown bears and other animals such as the tundra wolf, arctic fox, and East Siberian lynx. Visit the mineral hot springs and geysers scattered throughout the region, and climb volcanoes for panoramic views of the peninsula. Walk through the native villages, visit the stone sculpture parks, go whale watching, take a cruise around the edges of the peninsula, and peruse the markets in town. The peninsula is notorious for its unpredictable weather, so dress accordingly in layers.
