New Jerusalem Monastery, Istra

4.6
#1 of 12 in Things to do in Istrinsky District
Take a short trip away from the bustling center of the city to visit New Jerusalem Monastery, a site that holds a special place in the history of the Russian Orthodox Church. The monastery dates back to the 17th century when Patriarch Nikon built it as a residence. He deliberately chose the location that reminded him of the Holy Land and made sure the design mimicked the Church of the Holy Sepulcher in Jerusalem. The monastery had a turbulent history, from ransacking during World War II to closing down under the communist regime, but today it again functions as a spiritual community. The monastery's surroundings give you the freedom to admire the architecture and religious art. Admission is free. Our Istrinsky District trip itinerary app makes visiting New Jerusalem Monastery and other Istrinsky District attractions simple, and helps you make a travel plan personal to you.

Remember my depressing emotion when visiting this place in 1987 year-dislocation was! Come again in 2015 year-everywhere was reconstruction, but seen through forests and concrete-saws reassuring returning beauty! And finally arrived in June 2017 and seen happy soul and emotions! Great job on the restoration of order and a location nearby! Visit the monastery and the town of Istra-wonderful opportunity to see an updated set and spend the day outdoors!

Visited the monastery with friends and children. Very mixed impressions: gone the way of the ancient, not fully restored, the old sacred Temple. Even the appearance of changed beyond recognition-disappeared dominanta-main dome is lost among the newly erected. Stucco and gilding just dazzle. Elizabethan Baroque in all its glory. Much depends on the Guide. If you are lucky, you will leave the old Museum Guide of tempering with the correct speech, a large reserve of knowledge, ability to find contact with the group, and if not, get a big volume, not systematized information, honestly: and you, as a lesson.

Great Temple, a large area with many interesting buildings, there is a spring, and Skiff, near several museums.

  • Just beautiful!
  • Beautiful !
  • Came with friends on the tour. The first problem is the parking. An hour spent on it. Very little café. Eat with him should have been taken. Only in the evening bought into Istria (in the market) and normal food are on the track. What he saw was pleased, but the service is not.

  • He visited a monastery since the early 80 's, saw and destroyed, and in an attempt to restore the SOVIET UNION, and when everything is not moving. Was familiar with the Museum's Director V.p. Novogorodcevym, now pohoronenym on the territory of the monastery. Remember the absolutely chilling cold in the Resurrection Cathedral in summer heat. And rare visitors to the Museum. Hope that will restore the monastery was not enough. And here he is, like Kitezh-Grad came out of nowhere. And most importantly restored prayer life. Thank God for everything.
