Libearty Bear Sanctuary Zarnesti, Zarnesti

(400+ reviews on the web)
Wildlife Area Nature / Park
Watch the bears feed on forest plants, climb trees, and swim in pools at Libearty Bear Sanctuary Zarnesti, which shelters over 70 animals who've been rescued from illegal exploitation. The story of the sanctuary started in 1998 when its founder, Cristina Lapis, saw three bears caged outside a restaurant who were being used to amuse customers. The habitat of oak and hazel forest allows the bears to stay hidden in the bushes, except in the morning when they come near the fence to be fed. The sanctuary is also home to a she-wolf that was born in a zoo and rejected by her own pack. Watch a short clip explaining how the sanctuary was built before going to see its furry residents. • I'd been eagerly looking forward to visiting the Libearty Bear Sanctuary at Zarnesti because originally, I'd intended to go trekking with an organised bear watch team from Brasov. It would have taken ...  more »
  • This is an amazing place, non profit organisation, saving bears in Romania from a rubbish life, they were living in cages so small, some came from circus life, some kept in restaurants so sad, but the...  more »

  • Had a great time. Got the 10am tour to avoid crowds which was great as had 10 people on ours...50 on the next! Great place and they do some great work. Lovely to see happy bears!
  • I would recommend everyone to go here. They're doing such a nice thing for the bears by giving them better conditions and health care and although it's a fenced area they have huge amounts of space to move around in. The tour only last one hour but it's definitely worth the price.
  • You have to come here! I might be biased because I have a profound love for bears, but this sanctuary does amazing work saving caged and mistreated bears, donkeys, and dogs. They have freed over 90 bears since their inception and after witnessing first hand the psychological effects that pervade in the bears even years later, you gain a greater appreciation for all the work that is done at this shelter. We opted for the more expensive private tour as our honeymoon present, but felt better when we learned that 100% of our fees went to feeding the bears. From what we heard, we were extremely lucky our morning, as we saw possibly about 40 bears out and about. Definitely come here and help support the ongoing rescue of Romanian bears!
  • Amazing bear rescue reserve. The work they do is amazing. You have to visit to help them. They are realky respectful with the bears so double check the opening time. Only open 3hours per day.
  • Not a zoo, but a wonderful place where they save the bears from the abusive people. 1.5 million dollars investment to help the bears, to keep away from the main predator, the humans...
