Sighisoara Historic Center, Sighisoara

(4.7/5 based on 900+ reviews on the web)
Go back to the time of medieval craftspeople and merchants at Sighisoara Historic Center, a small, fortified town--now a World Heritage Site--built by Saxon settlers in the 12th century. This was the birthplace of Vlad the Impaler, a daunting Romanian ruler whose life story inspired the legend of Dracula. Strategically built on a hill, the town played an important commercial role on the route between Central Europe and the Ottoman Empire. Walk amidst the stone and brick houses topped by high tiled roofs. Take the long stairway, covered by the 17th-century wooden roof and guarded by a clock tower, to reach the citadel on top of the hill. Nine out of the original 14 watchtowers remain standing on the citadel wall. To visit Sighisoara Historic Center and other attractions in Sighisoara, use our Sighisoara itinerary planner.

  • Very nice ,but well taking care of ,it seems like in 2 or 3 year will be destoyed ! Please keep the citadel in good shape
  • Declared world heritage by UNESCO, the Citadel of Sighișoara has the fame of being the medieval set inhabited at present better conserved of Europe. You will not disappoint us, is precious, and there are the most remarkable monuments of the city: the tower clock, Church Hill, indoor stair, the House of Vlad Tepes, the Dominican monastery, etc. In addition, it is surrounded by a defensive wall that reached Fourteen towers, keeping nine today. All the houses in the old town are a superb colorful. It is a must-see if you come to Romania. It is relatively small; from one end to another of the Citadel (of the Cathedral Roman Catholic Church Hill), just there are 500 metres and its maximum width is not beyond 200 meters. In one morning or one afternoon we must have time to quietly visit
