Orthodox Cathedral, Sibiu
(4.7/5 based on 130 reviews on the web)
The red-and-yellow brick building of Orthodox Cathedral, topped with a copper roof and decorated with round mosaics depicting Jesus and the four evangelists, represents the seat of the Romanian Orthodox Archbishop. The architecture of this early 20th-century cathedral combines the elements of a Byzantine basilica with Baroque influences. Its main entrance is flanked by two tall towers with skylights ending in double bulbs. Above the entrance, notice an arched stained-glass window with a scene from the Old Testament depicting three angels seated at the table--representing the Holy Trinity. A massive gold chandelier beneath the central dome and the three-story golden iconostasis dominate the interior. The walls and ceilings are covered with neo-Byzantine frescoes. With our custom trip planner, Sibiu attractions like Orthodox Cathedral can be center stage of your vacation plans, and you can find out about other attractions like it, unlike it, near it, and miles away.

  • Although the works started only in 1902 and consecrated in 1906, the idea of an Orthodox Cathedral had already been demonstrated, in 1857, by Andrei Saguna, at the time the highest authority of the Orthodox Church. Dedicated to the Holy Trinity, the Holy Trinity Cathedral is a miniature copy of the Hagia Sophia, in Istanbul. The Church exterior is colored brick, alternating five rows of yellow brick road with three rows of red brick and, apart from its towers, boasts a magnificent dome. The main entrance is a porch with three arches supported by four columns. The interior is a stunning beauty, with its golden luster and its 76 lamps, his Byzantine style icons, the Golden wood iconostasis, painted walls with religious motifs in vibrant colors, the pulpit in the middle of the Cathedral, its stained-glass Windows richly adorned with paintings, all earning a deeper look and time consuming.
