Bridge of Lies, Sibiu

4.0
#3 of 38 in Things to do in Sibiu
Bridge of Lies represents the oldest forged-iron bridge in Romania, decorated with rosettes plus floral and geometric motifs. It bears the city's coat of arms on its southern side. Friedrich-Hütte built the bridge in 1859, probably for the circulation of carts. The peculiar name of the bridge--which is the result of the mispronunciation of a German word "Liegenbrücke," meaning "the bridge down"--has inspired several local legends. One story goes that the bridge repeats all the lies uttered by the people crossing it, thus bringing the liars down to earth. Point a mandatory visit to Sibiu. Truth be told, that it is a bridge of liars I learned just by being here for the second time. The first time I was going, I pointed out that an interesting bridge, nicely flowered, etc. Now I have visited it for the fourth time by telling another person that each time I talked to travel after Romania what it is and why such significant. ... As a side note I reflected how much in all of this is marketing. Just make up a story, distribute and ... something becomes known and desirable destinations.

As an attraction in and of itself it's pretty but nothing spectacular. The surrounding area is pleasant though and at night it has a good atmosphere, with live music from a restaurant. Worth visiting if in in Sibiu but not worth visiting Sibiu especially for as some guides would suggest.

It is better not to lie when you are on it, for the legend says: If I am to lie the bridge will collapse.

It's a landmark of the city, and there's some history and legend around it. It provides quite a pretty view, too.
