Big Square (Piata Mare), Sibiu

(4.8/5 based on 800+ reviews on the web)
Big Square (Piata Mare) features medieval and classical houses noted as "the eyes of the city," because the narrow roof window openings resemble half-open eyes. Surrounded by museums, cafes, and restaurants, and paved with granite tiles, the square was initially established as a grain market during the 14th and the 15th centuries. See the central fountain with the iron grates and the statue of Gheorghe Lazăr, founder of the first language school in Romania. Prominent buildings include Brukenthal Palace, which houses a museum, the city hall, and an 18th-century Jesuit church. Notice the flag on the roof of the Council Tower, which bears the emblem of the guild. Use our Sibiu trip generator to arrange your visit to Big Square (Piata Mare) and other attractions in Sibiu.

  • Where it all happens. Restaurants, bars, the families in celebration. Events also take place in this square, as the race, lasting 3 days that happened when I was there. The square was full of cars, trucks, pilots, mechanics. It's worth it.

  • Sibiu was a very positive experience. A beautiful city to wander with many fine buildings. Large enough to catch a couple of days. Recommended!

  • A really beautiful place. We visited it while it was all covered in snow - really wonderful! A must while in Sibiu (you cannot miss it, even if you wanted to, I guess)!
