Balea Glacier Lake, Sibiu County

(4.6/5 based on 180+ reviews on the web)
Legend has it that Balea Glacier Lake was named after a brave young shepherd who became the king's chief commander before he fell into the lake during a storm. The site features views of the surrounding mountains, and amenities include two chalets, a mountain rescue station, and a small improvised market near the lake where you can buy local food. During winter, you can stay at the first ice hotel ever built in Eastern Europe. To reach the site, take the cable car from Balea waterfall, or navigate a car or a bike up the Transfăgărășan Road. • All the way up to the Lake is very special, including a huge dam, spectacular scenery at high altitude, finding snow in midsummer... nature at its purest

  • A group of us, about 25, stayed at the Ice hotel during the winter season when the lake was frozen over. It was extremely beautiful and we enjoyed range of snow/ice activities like tubing, banana boat...  more »
  • We took the cable car to reach the Lake (which we saw snow indoor). Usually in the summer you can reach through a road that can barely be seen from the gondola because submerged in snow. Here is a beautiful hotel with igloo arrived on outbuildings and a beautiful ice Church. You can do activities around the snow (cakes and ride on inflatable snow). Frigid temperatures of course but a breathtaking view. For there is also a restaurant in a hotel "normal." To see the whole thing absolutely. I don't know how it is in summer but in winter is gorgeous. Wrap up warm ...
