Legend has it that Balea Glacier Lake was named after a brave young shepherd who became the king's chief commander before he fell into the lake during a storm. The site features views of the surrounding mountains, and amenities include two chalets, a mountain rescue station, and a small improvised market near the lake where you can buy local food. During winter, you can stay at the first ice hotel ever built in Eastern Europe. To reach the site, take the cable car from Balea waterfall, or navigate a car or a bike up the Transfăgărășan Road. • A lake that lies in the glacier more than 2000 meters altitude in the Fagaras Mountains, in the Carpathians. A place of great natural beauty.

  • Small mountain lake, reached by cable car or car, nestled between steep rocky walls rediscovered a bright green, in the heart of Romania.

  • I think we didn't choose the correct time to go there (12 pm) regarding the huge trafic jam in the shuttle ... and after no parking place ... so we continued to find a place near a torrent with a lot ...  more »

  • The highlight of our 10 days in Romania. Wonderful drive up to the lake, with a pitstop at the waterfalls below. The winding roads up were vertigo-inducing at times. Once you're at the top (near the lake), it can get crowded. The jam was a tad troublesome, so get there early. There are quite a number of food stalls around, so you can get somewhat fresh food there for a nice picnic. Also, bring a jacket as it gets cold there even in the summer. That said, it's really all about the views. Enjoy.
  • Forget about the castles but HERE! This was awesome breathtaking lake that worth driving for. Enough parking with well organized and small market to but something NOTE: Please don't throw litter around this area
  • The top of the pass. Great ride through the clouds. Do it on a motorcycle like we did to get the full experience. Love it here
  • One of the most picturesque places in Romania. The road to the lake it s amazing, the views are breath taking.
  • Gorgeous lake and mountains, but too touristy and people just dump their trash all over. THIS is where you need to go to get the iconic overview of the Transfagarasan highway. Get there as early as you can to find a parking space and get photos before the selfie sticks come out. Big traffic jam by the afternoon. You can't see the lake from the road, it's the pull off right before the tunnel where there are suddenly booths and people and traffic. The pictures are nice, but you have to climb the mountain to get them (it's not too rough). On the ground it's just a bunch of eyesore architecture and antennas. I truly wish if they were going to make a tourist attraction out of nature, they would try their hardest to blend in and not ruin the landscape. And to the people of Romania (this comes from a Romanian) please take better care of your country, stop throwing trash everywhere.
