#1 of 6 in Parks in Sibiu County
Legend has it that Balea Glacier Lake was named after a brave young shepherd who became the king's chief commander before he fell into the lake during a storm. The site features views of the surrounding mountains, and amenities include two chalets, a mountain rescue station, and a small improvised market near the lake where you can buy local food. During winter, you can stay at the first ice hotel ever built in Eastern Europe. To reach the site, take the cable car from Balea waterfall, or navigate a car or a bike up the Transfăgărășan Road. • On the end of April we appeared in winter mountains. Few meter of snow, ice sculptures and frozen lake. Wonderful.  more »
  • The experience was successful. The cable car view did it for us. From the bottom of the mountain to the frozen lake, lunch at the restaurant - hot soup and gulash closed the matter for the better.  more »
  • At the end of April, Transpasi Road is still closed and does not appear to open soon. The roads are covered with snow. Drive on the 7C road to the souvenirs and the parking stalls behind the hotel. From there, it has a cable car. We arrived at about 10 am and immediately hit the cable car. The cost of 30 lei is towards one. Later a queue was created, but not long. The increase is very beautiful, everything is snowy. See a waterfall and the road. It's hard to imagine this is where cars go. At the end of the boarding reach 2000 from height. It's all snow. The lake is frozen and snowboarding for 100 lei to 10 mins. Very pretty to turn around, to play in the snow, there is a view of the valley near the building with a glass cross. We thought to enter the restaurant at Cabana Balea Lake but the terrace did not Nico snow from tables and indoors was not inviting. No one approached us, and it was a shame to sit inside when you didn't see the view from the Windows. The Ice Hotel is still standing. Entry costs 15 lei.

  • 5 stars for this amazing place. The views from the lake over the Transfagarasan road are amazing. This is one of the many best places to visit in Romania. During winter, there is an Ice hotel being built every year, and lasts for a couple of months, where people can sleep in or just visit it.
  • Beautiful, we stayed in the ice hotel, it was a stunning location.
  • Really nice place, high in the mountains. Accessible by car. But avoid it during the weekends, during high season. It's packed full of people and cars. It's not nice anymore.
  • You must come here if you plan a trip around Romania. All parking spots cost money except a few spots inside the road leading to the restaurant. Parking is 10 lei. Do not buy the pretzels they hang from the shops, they are most likely to be stale. Try to go around the lake by foot and hike the different paths there.
  • Breathtaking views and nature
