Peasant Fortified Church at Prejmer, Prejmer

The Prejmer fortified church is a Lutheran fortified church in Prejmer, Brașov County, in the Transylvania region of Romania and the ethnographic area of the Burzenland. The church was founded by the Germanic Teutonic Knights, and then was eventually taken over by the Transylvanian Saxon community. Initially Roman Catholic, it became Lutheran following the Reformation. Together with the surrounding village, the church forms part of the villages with fortified churches in Transylvania UNESCO World Heritage Site.

  • 10 Lei per person, and you are in. Although this looks awesome and fortress from the outside. What, one wonders, such thick walls? Inside the temple. But the walls run wooden galleries, though this is a courtyard apartment buildings. It is! Separate komnatushki for life, school classes, workshops, warehouses. The outer Gallery is impressive. Medieval people knew a lot about defense. Visit. Very interesting.

  • Prejmer fortified church is the most beautiful of all Romania and the largest in Europe. It was not always a fortified church, but between 1212 and 1213 peasants and Saxon craftsmen decided to build a fortress around the Church to be able to defend themselves against invading peoples. The walls are between 5 and 8 meters thick with 14 meters high and with a capacity to be able to accommodate some 270 families, about 1200 people, all spread over three floors with wooden stairs was quite prepared to withstand long murderers. It was built with ladrillorojo, stone and wood. The building is accessed through a vaulted passage of a 100 meter long reinforced with two rows of doors. The funny thing is that you can go entering rooms, visit the old school rooms with period furniture, stores of grain, etc. The citizens of greater status had assigned the best homes. As they could spend several months right, they had passages go outside to stock up without being able to be seen by enemies. Admission is 10 I read, also will have access to the Museum where you can see clothing and furniture of the time. Please do not fail to visit it because it is a real trip to the middle ages, and is perfectly preserved.
