Voronet Monastery, Gura Humorului
(4.7/5 based on 300+ reviews on the web)
A so-called the "Sistine Chapel of the East," Voronet Monastery draws visitors because of its exterior frescoes and its status as a World Heritage Site (together with other painted churches of Moldavia). The scenes are painted with an intense nuance of "Voronet blue," a color obtained from lapis lazuli. Stephen the Great erected the monastery in 1488 after he had chased the Turks from Wallachia. Pay attention to the fresco of the last judgment on the western wall. You'll notice that the doomed souls wear Turkish turbans, and that the souls being carried to heaven are wrapped in Moldavian towels. The interior of the church shelters the delicately carved wooden chair of the ruler. The first abbot of the monastery, Saint Daniil the Hermit, is buried on the monastery grounds. • This small chapel frescoed whole worth the hassle of getting in here. The frescoes do not leave a centimetre of space and look great: dozens of figures, depicted with lavish costumes, chasing each other on the walls, filling the eyes of wonderful Voronet blue. Perhaps the comparison is inappropriate but I was reminded of the Scrovegni Chapel in Padua.

  • The monastery is easy to find and there is a large car park. A really beautiful place to visit. Very highly recommended.
  • We visited on a cold evening. Beautiful monastery externally, leaving much to be desired in its inside, completely dark due to excessive burning of candles. For pictures, you have to pay, it's not worth it. You should use the amount collected by the entry and photos for restore. Left something to be desired.
