Voronet Monastery, Gura Humorului

4.7
#1 of 87 in Things to do in Northeast Romania
A so-called the "Sistine Chapel of the East," Voronet Monastery draws visitors because of its exterior frescoes and its status as a World Heritage Site (together with other painted churches of Moldavia). The scenes are painted with an intense nuance of "Voronet blue," a color obtained from lapis lazuli. Stephen the Great erected the monastery in 1488 after he had chased the Turks from Wallachia. Pay attention to the fresco of the last judgment on the western wall. You'll notice that the doomed souls wear Turkish turbans, and that the souls being carried to heaven are wrapped in Moldavian towels. The interior of the church shelters the delicately carved wooden chair of the ruler. The first abbot of the monastery, Saint Daniil the Hermit, is buried on the monastery grounds. It is the most famous Romanian monastery built under Stephen I the great in 1488 in just 4 months. Other external frescoes were added in the first half of the 1500. Today only the Church characterized by frescoes dominated by the famous "Voronet blue" which, to this day, despite extensive chemical analysis, no one has been able to play enough to be considered unique in the world. It was noted only that its hue depends on the humidity in the atmosphere. He has been called the Sistine Chapel of the East to the main fresco showing the last judgement. of the West façade. Interesting also that above the door of the porch with our Lady of mercy and sides the two angels in prayer.

Stephen the great ordered the construction to commemorate the victory over the Turks in 1475. The unique fortress monastery, erected in 1487 in less than four months. Hosts frescoes of biblical theme inside and outside.

You have to see it. It is impressive. His paintings outdoors, on the side most exposed to wind and rain, damaged and very well conserved in the opposite. COMPLETELY painted inside, is indescribable. The serene environment; but very busy. Even so, if you're going to Romania is forced vidita.
