Categories: Scenic Drives, Landmarks, Outdoor Activities, Tourist Spots
Inspirock Rating:
4.8/5 based on 420+ reviews on the web
With its sheer drops, Transfagarasan Highway winds through the mountains, in sections clinging to the cliffs while passing through a natural gorge. Urban legend has it that Nicolae Ceausescu ordered the building of the 150 km (93 mi) road as a strategic route in case of Soviet invasion. The road will take you past the two castles associated with Vlad the Impaler (who inspired the legend of Dracula); you'll also see several lakes and a waterfall as you make your way to the second-largest dam in the country. The road's highest point is the tunnel, which connects the northern and southern sides of the lake at 2,042 m (6,700 ft). Be prepared to take your time, as you may run into shepherds and large flocks of sheep enroute. • This road is beautiful, if you have the time so feel free to take to get to Sibiu. This road is closed in winter, that's why the GPS and google maps does offer.
