Transfagarasan Highway, Curtea de Arges

(460+ reviews on the web)
Scenic Drive
With its sheer drops, Transfagarasan Highway winds through the mountains, in sections clinging to the cliffs while passing through a natural gorge. Urban legend has it that Nicolae Ceausescu ordered the building of the 150 km (93 mi) road as a strategic route in case of Soviet invasion. The road will take you past the two castles associated with Vlad the Impaler (who inspired the legend of Dracula); you'll also see several lakes and a waterfall as you make your way to the second-largest dam in the country. The road's highest point is the tunnel, which connects the northern and southern sides of the lake at 2,042 m (6,700 ft). Be prepared to take your time, as you may run into shepherds and large flocks of sheep enroute. • Could not see much as it was cloudy and snowing but still beautiful. Took the skytram up the mountain. Pick a clear day if you can but other than that there is still plenty to see and do always fun.  more »
  • Like the predecessors-I recommend a trip about 6 in the morning, when the way is less tourists. We were at the beginning of August, impressions and views-awesome. There's also adrenaline, especially on climbs uphill. A lot of places where you can stay, get out and take some pictures. The views are wonderful. Some important observations. Is pretty cool-you need to be well dressed. If you have motion sickness-I recommend to take something before you go. I did, and right away I felt the difference when the drug stopped running. Hard is also a toilet on the route, we were able to use the toilet at, though usually do not allow it. If you are near-see route necessarily.
