Transfagarasan Highway, Curtea de Arges

(4.8/5 based on 460+ reviews on the web)
With its sheer drops, Transfagarasan Highway winds through the mountains, in sections clinging to the cliffs while passing through a natural gorge. Urban legend has it that Nicolae Ceausescu ordered the building of the 150 km (93 mi) road as a strategic route in case of Soviet invasion. The road will take you past the two castles associated with Vlad the Impaler (who inspired the legend of Dracula); you'll also see several lakes and a waterfall as you make your way to the second-largest dam in the country. The road's highest point is the tunnel, which connects the northern and southern sides of the lake at 2,042 m (6,700 ft). Be prepared to take your time, as you may run into shepherds and large flocks of sheep enroute. • Incredible; another word; I can't think Despite everything you had read that the road was very bad, the truth is that we did it without any problem; in parts low if it is a regular and you have to go carefully, but top is fine; going with caution it is made without any problem. We went by Carțișoara and left by Arefu, which represents about 100 kms., which is not long at any time since we are constantly stopping to admire the scenery. 20 minutes from Carțișoara we find an area full of hotels and stalls, from where we can make a route to get to the Balea waterfall. Following the road we reach the fantastic Balea Lake, where we can stay a while; There is a very large parking where you can leave the car by only 5 lei (euro) full day; the area is full of restaurants, refuges and stalls that sell typical products. From here we begin the descent, and in a quarter of an hour find Capra waterfall, which falls close to the road. We are already very close to the end the Vidraru dam, with some beach bars where you can get mici or mititei. We also see a statue of Prometheus. To finish, five minutes after the dam we find the ascent to Cetatea Poenari; If we have courage and strength and are able to climb 1.480 steps we will be rewarded with some incredible views. And already the road is practically finished. An unforgettable and absolutely recommendable experience.

  • The road and landscape are wonderful. The road on both side of the mountain are beautiful. On summer holiday could be very crowded, especially on weekends and on top. So better avoid august trip. In t...  more »
  • This was a lovely area to go away for a night or two, and then take our time driving home via the Highway. We made plenty of little stops, got stopped by cattle, and then sheep, in the road. The lakes...  more »
