National Military Museum Bucharest, Bucharest

4.1
At National Military Museum Bucharest, learn about Romania's most important battles for freedom from the pre-Roman Empire until present-day, including the 1989 revolution. King Ferdinand founded the museum in 1923. It occupies the building of a former officers' college and displays a collection of weapons, missiles, helicopters, tanks, canons, and airplanes, as well as uniforms, medals, trophies, and historical military documents. Notice the communist mural celebrating the Palace of Parliament at the entrance. The revolution exhibit includes personal belongings of soldiers and civilians killed during the 1989 uprising. The courtyard houses 20th-century military hardware, such as Soviet missile launchers and a German tank from World War II. Do not miss the spacecraft in which Romanians launched their first astronaut into orbit. Note that you have to pay extra to take photos. • There are a lot of artifacts in this museum, but it was a little hard to follow. I would have liked to see more on the recent history than 5000 BC.  more »
  • Lots of exhibits from very early in history up to the present day, just a shame only about half or less had been translated into English. The plaques on the big military kit outside could also have be...  more »
  • Large halls in an elegant building. Unfortunately, there are few explanations in Romanian and none in English. I missed an audio guide and a “quick tour” to select among the huge numder of artifacts.  more »

  • A little off the beaten track but worth the visit. Good combination of everything from tanks to history and aircraft. As you enter the main building you can see cannons and guns from the earlier times and on your right more modern equipment. Main building gives the early years which is impressive, sometimes with a English translation which makes things easier. The heating was on at a very toasty 24 deg a little warm this time of year. In the back of the building there is a courtyard full of varying equipment which sadly is decaying over time. There are three other buildings one on transport at the back which was locked at the time. One on aviation, and another on arms. Very impressive. Overall worth a visit for anyone with a military interest.
  • The museum is OK, reasonable amount of exhibits and plenty of old military vehicles in the courtyard. What lets it down are the lack of explanations relating to exhibits or anything else. No map provided to help patrons find particular exhibits/areas of interest, staff not unfriendly, nor enthusiastic or overly helpful. One certainly didn't meet anyone who had any passion for sharing history with patrons which has been commonplace at nearly every other museum one has visited in my lifetime. In comparison to other museums it's pretty poor but if you have time to kill and are in the area it's worth a visit, I wouldn't advise anyone to go out of their way to visit unless you are a huge fan of real life tanks and other military vehicles as seeing them up close in the flesh is really the only selling point of the place.
  • Great museum, but be aware there are not a lot of explanations inside. The museum assumes a good knowledge of the Romanian history. The decaying military vehicles in the courtyard are very interesting to explore.
  • Great place to visit in Bucharest, hosting an impressive collection of objects from the Romanian military history. It covers all the historical times from the bronze age to contemporary present day. Make sure you also go to the courtyard behind the main building where for real size military equipments like tanks, guns, trucks & even aircrafts. As well, there are 3 other pavilions situated in the back of the main building that host collections of military transport vehicles & chariots, military uniforms & weapons. Prices range from 5 lei (children & students) to 20 lei (adults). Just make sure you have cash with you because you can't pay by card at the entrance.
  • A great museum where you can learn a lot about Romania's history from a military point of view. It features from crude stone tools to rockets used until the 1990's. Small scale fortification and castle models. A lot of maps and uniforms. And from small artillery guns that could be towed by horses to train fixed heavy artillery guns. Tanks, planes, armoured carriers old and relatively new. There is a main museum, in another building a level for guns and a level for uniforms, another building for aviation related stuff and also one building.(which was closed) with parachutes and related material.
