National Military Museum Bucharest, Bucharest

4.1
At National Military Museum Bucharest, learn about Romania's most important battles for freedom from the pre-Roman Empire until present-day, including the 1989 revolution. King Ferdinand founded the museum in 1923. It occupies the building of a former officers' college and displays a collection of weapons, missiles, helicopters, tanks, canons, and airplanes, as well as uniforms, medals, trophies, and historical military documents. Notice the communist mural celebrating the Palace of Parliament at the entrance. The revolution exhibit includes personal belongings of soldiers and civilians killed during the 1989 uprising. The courtyard houses 20th-century military hardware, such as Soviet missile launchers and a German tank from World War II. Do not miss the spacecraft in which Romanians launched their first astronaut into orbit. Note that you have to pay extra to take photos. • What a great surprise. The National Military Museum in Bucharest is a large, full of displayed treasures and extremely well done complex. Chronologically organized, the path laid out will teach visitors plenty of details about Romania, from Paleolithic age to nowadays. Medieval Period, 19th century, WW1 and WW2 sections are splendid. Weapons, uniforms, battle flags, orders and medals, tanks and many more. A must do if you’re interested in History. 16 lei admission fee for adults (2017).
  • The museum is stuck in the nineties. It's a pity that the exhibits aren't put in their deserved places. The location is well suited for a museum but the presentation is not. No interactive items, the descriptions are small and sometimes on the glasses. The staff is like Grinch except for the ladies from the main entrance which are kid-friendly. Overall, it's worth visiting but keep yours expectations low so you won't be disappointed.
  • Looks like an excellent museum but the very unfriendly and unhelpful ladies do not allow anyone in after 4pm. So get there earlier. Sad!
  • Very nice museum. Wouldn"t hurt to give a small flyer at the entry with the place map
  • Very large museum It was a surprise there are so many things to see, starting from the first weapons from geto-roman wars all the way to medieval fortresses, peasant rebellions and more recent wars. Also, there are 3 additional buildings to visit apart from the main one, which include coaches, military uniforms, aviation models and of course a yard full of tanks of different sizes and from different ages. The downside is it lacks a general map of all the things to visit and we had no idea to make a plan to spend several hours there. Definitely a place to visit again

Where to stay in Bucharest

To take advantage of Bucharest's lively downtown, look for accommodations in the areas of Universitatii square, Unirii, Romana, or Victoriei to be closest to bars, clubs, and restaurants, as well as many of the major sights. Choose from a variety of hostels and budget hotels, or book a night at one of the mid-range or luxury hotels. If you decide to venture farther out of the city, look for lodging close to public transportation to avoid the city's notoriously bad traffic.
