Lipscani, Bucharest

3.9
#3 of 10 in Neighborhoods in Romania
Lipscani preserves the spirit of pre-World War II in its many restaurants, bohemian bars, live music venues, and antique stores selling old photos of the city. From the Middle Ages to the early 19th century, the area was flooded with merchants from Western Europe. Recent excavations revealed ancient thoroughfares and fortifications several meters underneath the street level. Walk the wooden sidewalks along the edges of restored apartment buildings with baroque balconies. See the ruins of the nearby Princely Court with the bust of Vlad the Impaler. On the north side of the district stands the 18th-century Stavropoleos Church, an evocative temple. • Lipscani is the pedestrian district of the historic center of Bucharest, where most clubs and restaurants in the city, whose number is surely growing. It is therefore natural that the area most frequented by tourists, although the atmosphere from the fence, sometimes quite kitsch, after a little bored. Nevertheless, it must be said that in this area are ancient Orthodox churches, including Stavropoleos (a masterpiece), belle epoque buildings, many of which unfortunately decadent and the Roman ruins, which is, inexplicably, a bust of Vlad Tepes, risen to single tourist attraction in a city that doesn't have much to offer apart from the interesting contrasts between past, present and future.

  • Historic center of stark contrasts, uneven, disjointed, there is a square as a meeting point, nor a real walking and shopping street. Lipscani is a pedestrian area, which tends to get an enclosure for tourists and, therefore, to polarize the presence of visitors, with some nice road and the local church, but full of kitsch. However, no matter where you go, what strikes the visitor is the strident cohabitation of a past further away, when the city experienced a belle epoque, which is testified by the decadent Art Nouveau buildings-some of which really amazing-with a more recent past, in which it suffered before the devastation of the bombings and then the brutalization of the Communist dictatorship, with the imposition of urbanistic works bloated and soulless phalansteries, who incorporated and destroyed much of the city, causing even moving material by some churches and facing the revolt of many others.

  • Is the liveliest street of Bucharest, full of restaurants and clubs. Very chaotic and always full of tourists, is a must for anyone visiting the city.
