Lipscani, Bucharest

3.9
#3 of 35 in Historic Sites in Bucharest
Neighborhood Historic Walking Area
Lipscani preserves the spirit of pre-World War II in its many restaurants, bohemian bars, live music venues, and antique stores selling old photos of the city. From the Middle Ages to the early 19th century, the area was flooded with merchants from Western Europe. Recent excavations revealed ancient thoroughfares and fortifications several meters underneath the street level. Walk the wooden sidewalks along the edges of restored apartment buildings with baroque balconies. See the ruins of the nearby Princely Court with the bust of Vlad the Impaler. On the north side of the district stands the 18th-century Stavropoleos Church, an evocative temple. With our international travel planner, Bucharest attractions like Lipscani can be center stage of your vacation plans, and you can find out about other attractions like it, unlike it, near it, and miles away.

Where to stay in Bucharest

To take advantage of Bucharest's lively downtown, look for accommodations in the areas of Universitatii square, Unirii, Romana, or Victoriei to be closest to bars, clubs, and restaurants, as well as many of the major sights. Choose from a variety of hostels and budget hotels, or book a night at one of the mid-range or luxury hotels. If you decide to venture farther out of the city, look for lodging close to public transportation to avoid the city's notoriously bad traffic.
