Trip Planner: Europe / Romania / Transylvania / Central Romania / Brasov County / Bran / Bran Castle (Dracula's Castle)
Originally built in the 14th century, Bran Castle (Dracula's Castle) draws visitors because of its association with the bloodthirsty 15th-century Romanian ruler, Vlad the Impaler. The castle served as a fortress guarding the mountain pass and was advertised as the home of the ruler--also known as Dracul (the devil), who inspired the legend of Dracula. Perched on a rock above the river, the site offers panoramic views of the mountains. Today, its interiors feature art and furniture that belonged to the last Romanian Queen, Marie. Different rooms house some historical writings and the royal family tree. Check out an open-air museum in the park at the bottom of the hill with traditional Romanian peasant cottages and barns. Definitely worth a visit. The place is very well organized and documented. If you are passionate about history and medieval stories, or if you simply visit it if you're nearby, you're going to love it. I highly recommend seeing the torture items and the tunnel of time as well. Make an extra effort if you get there ^^
The castle is great! Everything you'd expect! Go in the evening when it's a lot more quiet. Pay extra for the Torture Exhibition but DO NOT pay for the "Time Tunnel", it's 40 Lei for literally a 1min walk out of the castle a different way. Avoid! Rest is cool
My son (11) and I added this to our 2 month trip through Europe. Awesome memory and a really well preserved piece of history. Hidden stairwells and the freedom to explore. They have a market where you can buy trinkets and the town has several restaurants and bars. Depending on the time of year, it may be chalk full of tourists. Worth the trip!
This was my first visit at this beautiful castle, an many more will follow. The location, the buildings and requisites makes you feel you are traveling back in time. More than that during the winter the landscape is completely transformed into something magical.
A total pleasant surprise. We've visited the Castle seven or eight years ago and looked nice, but now it is absolutely beautiful. It was recently renovated and filled with very nice pieces of old furniture and belongings of the Royal Family. Everything is competed by explanations, movies, multimedia content which reflect both the historical part and legends and local superstitions. Somebody told me once few years back that was a little bit disappointing since everybody tried to convince him that Dracula is just fiction even he came specially to "feel" the vampire's touch knowing is just a legend. Now I think this is no longer the case. The multimedia part on the upper levels is doing the job verry well. Another amazing surprise is the special elevator built in the old well. To keep it short is an amazing experience... Everything was completed by the snow which just started to fall when we were finishing our visit. Congratulations to the patrons and curators for an amazing job.
