The Fortified Church of Biertan, Biertan

The Fortified Church of Biertan houses a rare example of a medieval "matrimonial prison," in which couples were confined for two weeks before they could end their marriage. The church belongs to the group of Transylvania villages with fortified churches that are listed as a World Heritage Site. The church building, surrounded by three rows of fortifications and nine gate towers, stands high on a hillock, offering views over the village, valleys, vineyards, and forests. Notice the 16th-century frescos on the southern tower, as well as the wooden bell tower on the north. The mausoleum tower houses the tombstones of the Saxon priest who built the church between 1486 and 1524.The interior features a carved stone pulpit and an altarpiece with 28 panels. Look for the intarsia door of the sacristy with a complex lock, exhibited at the 1889 World's Fair in Paris. • Its imposing silhouette dominates the town, dates back to the 15th century and is a UNESCO World Heritage site. The church retains its triple walls up to 12 metres, unique and beautiful. Within a beautiful altarpiece formed by 28 panels. But the highlight of the Church is closing the door of the sacristy in which were stored the treasures of the Church: is a real marvel of engineering of 1900, formed by ben 19 locks placed in a single mechanism. Original bastion solution ... to solve the problems of couple, husband and wife locked up in a room with only one bed and one covered do not doubt that nobody has asked for centuries to divorce. Absolutely worth the visit, feels like stepping back in time.

  • This place is a real gem hidden from the mass market tourism which is great. We visited during winter and it was like a fairytale. The whole town is beautiful and not pretty hard to get to.  more »

  • Great exterior.. The interior wasn't as great as other churches... Nice panoramic view of the town, and nice walk around the church. The restaurant on the outside is highly recommended.
  • This medieval fortified church is absolutely impressive. Any detour you make is worth the trouble. The village is nice as well.
  • Very nice place, I haven't visited a fortified church before so, in my view, it deserve a visit
  • Nice place. Worth seeing.
  • Situated as the centrepoint of the very small town it stands very well presented, clean and grand. Exceptionally well preserved and looked after. It is off the beaten track but you pass the friendly locals on the way
