The Fortified Church of Biertan, Biertan

4.4
#3 of 12 in Historic Sites in Sibiu County
The Fortified Church of Biertan houses a rare example of a medieval "matrimonial prison," in which couples were confined for two weeks before they could end their marriage. The church belongs to the group of Transylvania villages with fortified churches that are listed as a World Heritage Site. The church building, surrounded by three rows of fortifications and nine gate towers, stands high on a hillock, offering views over the village, valleys, vineyards, and forests. Notice the 16th-century frescos on the southern tower, as well as the wooden bell tower on the north. The mausoleum tower houses the tombstones of the Saxon priest who built the church between 1486 and 1524.The interior features a carved stone pulpit and an altarpiece with 28 panels. Look for the intarsia door of the sacristy with a complex lock, exhibited at the 1889 World's Fair in Paris. Biertan was one of the earliest German settlements in Transilvaniafin from 1224. For disputes with other settlements for territory started the fortifications. The first document that certifies as fortress is of 1397 and you can still see the three rows of walls, the six towers and three ramparts. The present Church in late Gothic style dates back to the end of the 15th century and from the top of the hill overlooking the valley below closely protected by towers and medieval ramparts. Monumental, a large room a beautiful altarere lockable with 28 painted panels, a beautiful stone pulpit of ' 500. Feature richly inlaid sacresia door and a special lock with 19 blocks tutttora working. Particular and curious "solo", a small room where they were holed up for a week the couples who wanted to get divorced to find a reconciliation. The trouble that you do for saire the slope and stairs to go visit is amply rewarded by the beauty of the place and its history that has been illustrated by the priest of the Church.

The fortified church was built in the 16th century peasant Citadel inside. You enter a fortified set composed of three pregnant, reinforced towers and bastions of defence. It is a Hall church in the Gothic style, with an altar interesting, consisting of 28 painted panels. The door of the sacristy contains 19 locks, still functional today - and which opens in a turn of the key. In the bastion is, you have the "Dungeon" where couples who wished were locked up for two weeks. In this room, there is only a table, a bed, a plate, a spoon and a cup for drinking water. It seems that following such treatment, couples réconciliaient!

A very nice church with a room that has a cool 13-point lock. You can't really climb any of the towers which would have given a great view. It's a little difficult to comprehend the fortifications otherwise. Is it just me, or does one of those towers resemble an emoticon?

Wonderful architecture in an idilic village.

It's not worth to pay to go in (10 lei), the views from outside are much better. Besides it is very abandoned.

Several sets of curtain walls and towers surrounding the church make it a more impressive site to visit than some of the more basic Saxon churches in the surrounding area. But realistically it's not going to take you too long to see it. Especially the display inside the 'matrimonial' building...
