Xhamia E Larme, Tetovo
(5/5 based on 50+ reviews on the web)
Originally built in 1438, Xhamia E Larme resembles a gingerbread house because of its colorful exterior. Instead of being decorated with ceramic tiles, the exterior and interior walls and ceilings are covered with rich floral and geometric ornamentation. Notice the illustration of the temple of the Prophet Muhammad, one of the few depictions of Mecca in Southeast Europe. During its 19th-century restoration by Abdurrahman Pasha, more than 30,000 eggs were used in preparation of the oil paint and glaze to decorate the colorful mosque. Two sisters from Tetovo who financed the building are buried in the turbe next to it. • Mosque decorated both inside and outside. It is quite unusual for such a religious type of building. The whole is harmonious, stylish enough and not overloaded. A dress of rigor (scarf for women and not too much bare skin for all)

  • The most unusual and beautiful mosques I've seen. It looks like a house of cards. Beautifully painted, very peaceful, very special place. Interesting history behind it. We came in November on a Sunday...  more »
  • When you enter the mosque you will enter a fantastic building! Beautiful paintings all over the walls and with lovely balconies up to the ladies apartment! Warm receiving!

  • I've never encountered a mosque with an interior like this. It looks as if it belongs somewhere in Florence. A fascinating example of the later Ottoman efforts to mimick European art and design. If you come upon this place, you have to try and gain entry to the interior, even if it means putting up with the grumpy old man who has the key.
  • The one of most beatiful mosques in the world, a wonderful emotions when you look at the paintings.
