Water Body Nature / Park
Explore a canyon filled with monasteries, medieval ruins, and natural caves at Lake Matka, Macedonia's first artificial lake. Stop by the lake and make your way around the rocky terrain surrounding it, one of the country's most popular areas for hiking. Peek into a few of the numerous of caves dotting the canyon, the deepest of which stretches back 176 m (577 ft) into the rock. Alternatively, hop aboard a kayak or raft and see the locale by water. Don't miss paying a visit to the series of medieval churches along the way, including several right along the water dating as far back as the 14th century. Put Lake Matka and other Skopje attractions into our Skopje trip generator, and watch your holiday take shape.

Where to stay in Skopje

The capital of Macedonia and a city of numerous sights, Skopje offers a good selection of places to stay despite its relatively modest size. Even though most hotels cluster in the center of town, you can easily find accommodation in other neighborhoods too. The selection ranges from several high-end hotels and fully-furnished apartments to many economical but charming places to stay. The city wide selection of hostels, many of which are very close to the city center, appeal to younger travelers.

  • A gorgeous place with hiking trails that provide amazing views of the canyon. I'd recommend taking the boat ride to the cave just to be on the water as well as trekking around it.  more »
  • We came to this place as recommended by a local. Not too far from the city. We rented a taxi & asked the driver to wait for us for an hour for about 1300 denar. It was a nice visit.  more »
  • The lake and area itself is really nice. We took the (crowded) bus to get there, and walked to the hotel/restaurant. We had a pretty good lunch there, pricy for Macedonia but still affordable. After t...  more »
