Lake Matka, Skopje

4.7
#1 of 49 in Things to do in Skopje
Explore a canyon filled with monasteries, medieval ruins, and natural caves at Lake Matka, Macedonia's first artificial lake. Stop by the lake and make your way around the rocky terrain surrounding it, one of the country's most popular areas for hiking. Peek into a few of the numerous of caves dotting the canyon, the deepest of which stretches back 176 m (577 ft) into the rock. Alternatively, hop aboard a kayak or raft and see the locale by water. Don't miss paying a visit to the series of medieval churches along the way, including several right along the water dating as far back as the 14th century. Put Lake Matka and other Skopje attractions into our Skopje trip generator, and watch your holiday take shape.

Surrounded by mountains with a dam more behind it. You may require a hefty challenging walk along the more ... only ... same path back again. Boats or kayaking can also. Beautiful surroundings.

A unique place. Created by man, but did not quite get it. What awaits us: poor way, poorly marked. Basically the only sensible is ok. 500 m from the entrance to the Canyon. Is free (as of 08.2017) and partially shaded. Along the way we can admire the overflowing garbage cans and all kinds of garbage produced by man-papers, poop, pet bottles, etc. Fortunately, when you reach the dam, behind which is a Canyon and the Lake is cleaner. Near the entrance is a pub, not cheap, but can withstand. If we have a lot of time (> 2hours) visit the hiking route along the Canyon, after a specially lined a shelf, you can detour to the monastery at the top. If the time is less, you have to take the boat, take her to the cave that you explore yourself. It looks like it's pretty funny, because the Lord before starts the generator that powers the light and asks to go to the center of the ... In the Middle-a lot of bats, interesting forms. At the end is a small lake. Time such trips-ok. 2. In the Canyon live dozens of species of butterflies, of which part is endemic. It really shows, because these butterflies is everywhere, odd that this did not praise.
