Stobi, Palikura

(4.7/5 based on 30+ reviews on the web)
At Stobi, walk through the well-preserved remains of an ancient Roman town that once stood at the crossroads of the Aegean world and the Balkans. Strategically placed at the confluence of two rivers, the first settlement was built in the 6th and 7th centuries BCE. Up until the earthquake of 518 CE, the ancient town was an important military, administrative, and trade hub of the Roman and early Byzantine empires. View the remains of ancient sanctuaries, Christian basilicas, luxurious private palaces, and public baths, as well as carved columns and stones. The oldest items found on the site are ceramic and bronze objects from the Neolithic and Iron Ages. Do not miss the stunning floor mosaics under your feet, the famous theatre, or the temple of Isis, an Egyptian goddess. Bring water and sunscreen. • It was very hot when we visited Stobi, but it was a nice break on the road between Thessaloniki and Ohrid. The city of Stobi was founded in the Hellenistic and experienced a development with the romanization under Augustus. Plundered by the Ostrogoths, she was then hit by several earthquakes before being definitively abandoned at the end of the life century. Completely forgotten, the city was rediscovered in 1861 by Léon Heuzey, and has been the subject of several campaigns of excavations since 1924. It is today one of the major archaeological sites of the young Republic of Macedonia. There are very beautiful mosaics, but the best preserved building is probably the theater. He has known several phases and the building visible today date from the 2nd century AD. It could accommodate up to 7600 people. The bleachers are carved in stone, and some of them have the surname of the spectators.

  • That's what I thought after visiting the ruins of this city, which had to be great. Mansions, temples, baths... and above all superb original and very elaborate mosaics can be seen. There is much to do and discover in this place and I suppose that in a few years it deserves even more it worthwhile to visit him. Anyway do not miss it.

  • Early Christian Roman city with basilica, theater, palaces, public Roman bathrooms.. Very well preserved mosaics, fountain, walls..
  • Stobi (Стоби, Στο'βοι,) is an urban settlement from ancient times located on the place where Black River (Црна Река, Erigon) enters into the Vardar River (Вардар, Axios). The site was crossed by important routes in the Balkans (Thessalonica, Sirmium, Heraclea Linkestis, Stobi, Pautalija, Serdica). Stoby was mapped to the famous Tabula Peutingeriana so that European explorers in the mid XIX century easily found its position. Archaeological excavations have been launched since the First World War and with occasional interruptions they are carried until today.
  • A great surprise, my group was there in 2010.
  • Vast and impressive, Stobi is a great way to spend a couple of hours wandering through the ruined boulevards and imagining them bustling back in the day.
