4.7/5 based on 420+ reviews on the web
Perched on a rocky cliff above the waters of Lake Ohrid, St. Jovan Kaneo stands as one of Macedonia's most important religious sites. Constructed originally during the 13th century, the church survived multiple renovations and six centuries of Ottoman Turkish rule. Pay a visit to the historical building and note its classic Orthodox construction, featuring brick and a central tower. Make your way inside to admire the detailed frescoes and works of religious art that decorate the inner dome and walls. Afterwards, grab your camera and wander around the outside of the structure, where you can take in the sweeping, panoramic view of the lake and the surrounding ring of mountains. • A bit away from the Centre of Ohrid, to walk to the fall of the fortress of Samuel. You can not enter but it is worth watching it from above (there is a viewpoint) with the bottom of the Lake. Another option is to arrive by boat (by 10-15 euros will get a half hour walk that includes it).
