Samoil's Fortress, Ohrid

4.0
Climb the hilltop to explore , which watches over the nearby lake and also serves as one of Ohrid's most recognizable symbols. Built upon the foundations of a fortress dating from the 4th century BCE, the structure has undergone a multitude of renovations and revitalizations since. Hike your way up to the top of the castle hill and admire the work of its imposing stone walls. Enter the fortress and explore the interior; though it's unrestored within, you can get a good sense of the layout. Be sure to climb atop the ramparts for a sweeping view of Lake Ohrid, the town, and the surrounding mountainous landscape. Samoil's Fortress is just one of the many highlights you can arrange to see using our online itinerary creator, Ohrid Edition.

  • This 10th century castle, built for the king Samoil of Macedonia, indicates the power of the medieval Bulgarian state. Only ruins left inside. But climb the ramparts to see spectacular views of Ohrid ...  more »
  • In Ohrydzie it is a look. Input is easy and you can this fortress turn in a one-day trail after the Ohridu monuments. Entrance is paid but symbolically. The walls of the Castle offers beautiful views of the city, Lake, mountains and other landmarks. Recommend.

  • Nice city view. Ticket costs 1 euro. It is possible to walk on the walls but some part (half approx.) of the fortress is closed for visit. One place where you can drink coffee or eat icecream is very close to gates. It is small and not presented on the map. The view is also nice from there. (see first photo) Coffee was good but other choice was very weak: chips, hot-dog and pair of real dogs, which were laying in the shadow near by.☺
  • It's a beautufull part of town and a important site to visit if you are interested in the Ottoman empire. Unfortunately not much more then the walls are remaining. But you also have a nice view on Ohrid.
  • The fortress is situated quite high, so it is a bit of a climb from the city. Well worth it though, the views from the top are amazing, you can see the whole city. Very low entrance fee (around 1 euro).
  • The place is worth for the views. Tickets are not too expensive, but could be cheaper. If you are not keen on climbing the wall next to it is a nice caffe with perfect view, too. And coffee is excellent.
  • Partly reconstructed fortress with spectacular lake view. You have to buy ticket inside.
