Saint Sophia, Ohrid
(4.5/5 based on 170+ reviews on the web)
Home to some of the best-preserved Byzantine religious artwork in the world, Saint Sophia understandably serves as one of Macedonia's most important church complexes. Visit the church, originally built by Macedonia's medieval rulers, and explore the grounds, including a courtyard, narthex, and series of hallways along the shores of Lake Ohrid. Enter the structure and admire the series of ornate and detailed frescoes along the walls and ceilings. Note that these frescoes, dating as far back as the 11th century and depicting Old Testament scenes, were long covered with plaster when the Ottomans converted the church into a mosque, hence their good condition. • A Byzantine Church at the beginning of the old town. Has entering 100 dinars (supposed to go for the upkeep of churches). Inside the Church the place is relatively empty, there is a beautiful temple and some frescoes/icons.

  • One of the oldest churches in Ohrid. It's old about 1000 years. Nice architecture and nice front yard. Must visit.
  • Worth seeing. Especially during traditional weddings (when you can see crowns over maids and grooms heads).
  • One of the "must go" places in Ohrid, quiet first thing in the morning but quite busy later during the day, so go bright and early.
