Saint Sophia, Ohrid

4.5
#3 of 10 in Historic Sites in Ohrid
Home to some of the best-preserved Byzantine religious artwork in the world, Saint Sophia understandably serves as one of Macedonia's most important church complexes. Visit the church, originally built by Macedonia's medieval rulers, and explore the grounds, including a courtyard, narthex, and series of hallways along the shores of Lake Ohrid. Enter the structure and admire the series of ornate and detailed frescoes along the walls and ceilings. Note that these frescoes, dating as far back as the 11th century and depicting Old Testament scenes, were long covered with plaster when the Ottomans converted the church into a mosque, hence their good condition. Put Saint Sophia into our Ohrid holiday planner and find out what's close by, where to stay, and where to head next.

  • It is the only church that still has original frescoes from the 11th to 13th. Outside it has a portico and a gallery at its top level. Inside, it is of three naves and a central dome of Byzantine style of the 11th century. The entrance is 100 dinars.

  • A beautiful 1000 year old church, a corner piece of Ohrid's more recent history. English information was available. I recommend hiring the services of a guide before embarking on a walk around the more ancient venues.
  • A small place to visit. But really beautiful. Loved walking around and taking photos
  • Place to visit definitely! Old frescoes worth seeing!
  • Very interesting. Check it out.
  • Ddefinitely a place worth a detour. Very old frescoes inside. The church was built on the foundations of the old church.
