Plaoshnik, Ohrid

4.1
#5 of 10 in Historic Sites in Ohrid
Walk among tombs, ruins, and religious buildings at Plaoshnik, a conglomeration of different archaeological sites on the shore above Lake Ohrid. Visit the area and explore the different nearby attractions, including Ottoman graves and the remains of mosaics from as far back as the 4th century. Afterwards, enter the famous Church of St. Clement and Panteleimon, constructed in the year 893 CE, and see the inner workings of what was once among the most important monasteries in the region. Be sure to keep an eye on the floor in front of you, as transparent glass sections reveal the even older foundation that lies beneath the structure. • The archaeological site will give you a glimpse into the Roman and some more contemporary history of Ochrid. While if offers an interesting view to a couple of interesting sites - a church, tombs, a basilica, the access to it is not the best experience you can get. In the summer of 2017 the road that leads to the site is still under construction and everything is very dusty. Additionally, the Roman mosaics that are on display have been exhibited in a way that potentially would not preserve them for a long time. As you can see from the pictures they are already covered with dust and seem to be very exposed to various weather conditions which is the main reason I rate the sight with 3 stars.
  • Went without a guide, kind of regret it. I think the background information will really set this this place apart.
  • The guide is extremely important there. The trip without him is a waste of time between bulk of stones. Ticket price is 2 euro.
  • The whole place is a historic monument. Phenomenal and unique
  • Beautiful area, amazing views, currently being developed to provide space for a university
