Monastery of Saint Naum, Ohrid

4.6
#1 of 58 in Sightseeing in Republic of Macedonia
Religious Site Historic Site
Perched on the rocky shoreline of Lake Ohrid right next to the Albanian border, Monastery of Saint Naum stands as one of the oldest complexes of its kind in the region. Originally constructed in the 10th century, the monastery has served several purposes during its history. Visit the complex and admire its wealth of religious artwork within, including several notable 18th-century wooden icons. You'll find a wide array of both Slavic and Greek frescoes adorning the walls as well. Be sure to stop by the grave of Saint Naum himself; it's rumored that you can still hear his heartbeat through the stone. Put Monastery of Saint Naum into our Ohrid vacation generator and find out what's close by, where to stay, and where to head next.

  • I would recommend everyone to check it. Very mistic, but yet beautiful place. The only problem is that road to it is very bad. Best way to get there is by boat  more »
  • If staying at Lake Orhid in Albania, do cross the border to see this Monastery. 800 years old with lots of ancient paintings on the wall. Nearby the lake is great for swimming.  more »
  • Old ortodox monastery on Ohid lake dedicated to St.Naum. Interesting midlle-age architecture and amazing nature.  more »

  • Definitely a place you should not skip on the trip by Ohrid Lake. The whole complex of the monastery was made so nice to feel like a 'paradise' :) The church of St. Naum is located on a hill, which offers a beautiful view of the whole lake. Here is the source of the river Black Drin. That you can visit with small boats. There are two restaurants where for an affordable price, you can have a nice lunch.
  • A must to see in Makhedonia. Beautiful church in the heart of a beautiful place. Not to miss the springs and the most peculiar boat men Nikola
  • Nice play to visit. But already too commercialised. But for a nice stroll it is recommended
  • Very attractive monastery with a rich history of st.Clement and others. Beautifull icons, gardens en springs. Combine all these local sites with a boattrip from Struga or Ohrid and you have a wonderfull day. There are some nice places to eat and drink for very affordable prices. The boat from Ohrid leaves around 9:30 and returns around 15:30. But you can go with a bus or taxi too.
  • wonderful monastry and nature but a tourist trap by the sellers around there
