Clock Tower, Bitola

3.8
#2 of 6 in Historic Sites in Pelagonia Region
One of the city's landmarks, Clock Tower offers a panoramic view of the town and surrounding landscape. The present tower was likely built in the 1830s, although mention of a tower here goes back as far as 1664. Legend has it that the people of Bitola gathered 60,000 eggs, which were supposed to hold the massive stone blocks together like plaster. The spiral staircase leads to the top of the 33 m (108 ft) tower, which holds the clock mechanism. Look for a golden plaque inside the tower that tells the story of the mechanism. In 1936, Germans donated 15 bells as a token of gratitude to the people of Bitola for burying German soldiers killed in World War I. A modern keyboard mechanism playing Macedonian popular songs replaced the bells in 1970. • This was a nice clock in the daytime but really cheesily lit at night. I wouldn't make a special trip to see it.  more »

  • With imposing height of 32 meters, the Clock Tower is the most recognizable landmark of Bitola. According to some historical records, a clock tower in Bitola is mentioned as early as 1664, but we can not reliably determine whether it is the same Clock Tower that exists today. According to some researchers, today's Clock Tower was built at the same time as the nearby church of St. Demetrius, in 1830. „There is a legend that the Turkish government collected 60,000 eggs from the local population, which were used in the mortar for the Clock Tower, as it would be stronger and more resilient.“ Until 1912 the Clock Tower in Bitola measured the time according to "alla turca" and afterwards the modern measurement of time "alla franga" was introduced. Set on a square base with sides of 5.8 meters, the Clock Tower is entered through a door on the north side, and stone spiral staircase leads to the upper end of the tower, which houses the clock mechanism. The first dial and clock mechanism was made by the German company "Konfage" and was placed on the Clock Tower in 1927. The belfries were replaced with “sajdzhii” responsible for the clock mechanism; the dials were white with black numbers and hands. „Around the Clock Tower until 1947 the “Pekmez market” was located as one of many markets that were in Bitola during the Turkish rule. “Pekmez Pazar” was the place where many oriental desserts could be found (baclava, kadaif, pekmez, and many other Turkish delights) and here also were housed the most beautiful inns, tea and pastry shops in Bitola.“ In 1936. in gratitude for the construction of a German cemetery, as a gift from Germany, the clock mechanism was again replaced and also 15 bells, heavy 900 kg were placed. This mechanism was restored in 1962 and in 1970 a keyboard was set for performing the new compositions. Bitola Clock Tower is one of the 180 towers in the world which has such a mechanism. With the beautifully arranged park in its environment, the Clock Tower is one of the most visited locations in Bitola for locals and also for the large number of tourists.
  • A great site to visit. A historical clock tower built in Ottoman time. Local myth has it that it was built by the Turks using some 60.000 eggs in the plaster. It has a clean park with benches around it, it's also in the centre of the town surrounded by the city's best landmarks.
  • Must see for everyone passing through/visiting Bitola
  • The Bitola Clock Tower The clock tower is located in a large square which includes a church and two mosques which shows the cultural diversity of this city. The Clock tower in Bitola is is the most recognizable monument, pride and emblem of the City. It is unknown when Bitola's clock tower was built. Written sources from the 16th century mention a clock tower, but it is not clear if it is the same one. Some believe it was built at the same time as St. Dimitrija Church, in 1830. Legend says that the Ottoman authorities collected around 60,000 eggs from nearby villages and mixed them in the mortar to make the walls stronger. The Bitola Clock Tower got its present appearance in the 19th century, and is 30 meters high. The tower has a rectangular base and is about 30 meters high. Near the top is a rectangular terrace with an iron fence. On each side of the fence is an iron console construction which holds the lamps for lighting the clock. The clock is on the highest of three levels. In 1927, the first clock mechanism was placed and some additional changes were made. The individuals in charge to ring the bells were replaced with sajzii which were in charge to take care of the clock and the clock mechanism. In 1936, 15 new bells, about 900 heavy ones, were placed and in 1962 the mechanism was renewed. In 1970 for the performance of music compositions, the piano was placed inside the tower. This Clock Tower is one of the 180 towers in the world which has built on this kind of mechanism. Every six hours one of six compositions is played: "Bitola Babam Bitola", "Biljana platno belese" and other beautiful songs.
