Al-Zubara Fort, Madinat Ash Shamal

3.5
#58 of 156 in Things to do in Qatar
Get a glimpse into military history at Al-Zubara Fort, part of a World Heritage Site that includes a Gulf merchant town. Within the town's ruins, the fort has stood since 1938 when Sheikh Abdullah bin Jassim Al Thani built it as a Coast Guard station. Now a museum, the space shows the architectural techniques of Qatar alongside artworks and archeological exhibits. Visit the still impenetrable fort and take shelter from the sun under the roof where soldiers would gather to patrol the coast. Take a peek into their lives by exploring the fort on your own. Put Al-Zubara Fort on your schedule, and learn what else deserves a visit by using our Madinat Ash Shamal trip itinerary planner.

  • This is one of the best place to visit in Qatar. Just Amazing. A World Heritage Site. Qatar"s first UNESCO World Heritage Site. It's One hour twenty minutes drive from Capital City, Doha (85 km away from Doha). This fort was built in 1938. The fort's design recalls earlier features common in Arab and Gulf region.
  • One should know the ancient times of Qatar and the Zubara Fort is the best places to know about Qatar, the traditional way of making Dho ( wooden boat), traditional fishing, traditional way of making well for pure drinking water, traditional way of making air cooled home and traditional way of making delicious food etc..etc.. and the early trade clothes, oil and food items.
  • An archaeological site which is recognised by UNICEF !! Very good to explore. You should come here. There is museum. Toilet and water available.
  • Superb fort which shows the way Qatar has developed from a fishing village
