Souq Waqif, Doha

4.5
#1 of 156 in Things to do in Qatar
Founded at the turn of the 20th century in a dried riverbed where Bedouin Arabs once traded wares, Souq Waqif remains a major marketplace providing access to a range of local goods. Frequented by locals and visitors, the market offers traditional clothing, handcrafted items, spices, and souvenirs, hosting many restaurants, cafes, and shisha lounges that serve Qatari, Yemeni, Syrian, and various other Middle Eastern cuisines. Check out the parts of the souq where domestic pets, like dogs, cats, turtles, and birds are sold, in addition to an area devoted to falcons and falconers. • This is the best place to spend your time if you are visiting Qatar. It is just amazing. It's so historic as almost none of the original buildings have changed in the last hundred years, only upgraded into stronger versions. You literally step back a hundred years when you walk into this place. The shops and smells and sights and everything is an amazing experience. You have small stands that sell crepes and Turkish ice cream, all the way to hotels to stay in for a night, which I definitely recommend if you have time. There are markets that sell spices and candies. The endless amount of alleyways will bring you to the popular sites filled with restaurants and big shops, and the hidden, yet amazing shops that sell everything. EVERYTHING. Except for electronics. If you haven't been here yet and you live here, you need to come or else you haven't seen the real, historic, cultural side of Qatar. If you are visiting, this is your top priority, alongside maybe the Islamic Museum of Art, or Sealine Beach. There is no reason to rate this amazing place under 4 stars.
  • A very inviting place to visit. Plenty of shops and stalls to see. Street food or restaurants, the choice is amazing. You'll be able to appreciate the local music played outside some restaurants. So much to see. Well worth a visit.
  • Nice historical shopping mall with modern facilities. If you are good at bargain only then do shopping otherwise just visit the place and site in open air to enjoying beauty
  • One of my favorite place to walk around with many things to see and do. Go on the weekend and there will be cultural shows. A good place to take pictures.
  • Great place for meeting up on an evening and watching the world rush by. Plenty of places to eat, some large portions so just a couple of dishes is more than enough to share. A fabulous gold market and some good bargains to be had amongst the maze of little shops.
