Walking along the streets and World Heritage-listed fortifications of Old San Juan, you'll feel like stepping right into a time machine, allowing you to peek into Puerto Rico's colonial past. Five centuries of history seem palpable at every step, with a narrow grid of streets lined by colorful homes and churches, and the coastline protected by enormous walls. One of the district's major attractions is an early 16th-century cathedral, which contains the tomb of famed Spanish explorer Juan Ponce de Leon. Other highlights include an old naval station, city hall, and a bronze monument commemorating the city's successful effort to fend off a British attack in 1797.
