Museo de Las Americas, San Juan

4.5
#6 of 25 in Museums in San Juan
Museo de Las Americas serves as an art museum dedicated to the Native American tribes from all over the Americas. Observe exhibits detailing the different peoples from around the Americas and where they originated from and lived. A highlight is the bronze castings and statues that display prominent figures from specific tribes. Another room's exhibits display folk art of the indigenous people with several examples. A separate display room focuses on Puerto Rico (instead of the Americas as a whole) and gives a great walkthrough of the indigenous people's history. • We impress us with the statues of the natives of different existing cultures of our America, which were made from molds of people. You can see a video with the elaboration of the statues, in the tribes themselves. We learned a lot from America in general, and of the history of Puerto Rico in particular. Definitely recommended

  • On the second floor of the building of the cuartel de Ballaja, 1864 construction, is located the Museo de las Americas. The exhibitions are very good, dealt with color and sound very well selected. Both "conquest and colonization" as the other thematic exhibitions glad to see they are designed with introduction, themes and areas closures with texts that guide the visitor,

  • Such a neat place - great history and they're doing a great job converting it into a museum - had a lovely afternoon moving from room to room - highly recommend.  more »

  • Inside a quiet square (also containing a small cafe/coffee shop) and currently being renovated from storm damage, there is still an exhibit open called Catharsis. This exhibit was beautiful and full of pieces from local artists and students to express their feelings from the storm, aftermath, and recovery. Some were hopeful - others more critical of the storm recovery efforts - but overall helped us as tourists empathize with the local culture.
  • Wowzer, this place is gorgeous and informative and cool. They have so many artifacts from native tribes, folk arts and crafts, information about the abolitionist movement. It's mind-blowing. They have a couple of contemporary exhibits too, which is neat. Bargain at 6 bucks per person.
  • The museum has 8 exhibits in total to visit (2 static & 6 rotating) however a recent fire has removed one of the rotating exhibits, and there is always the chance that a rotating exhibit will be in transition. Nevertheless expect to find at least 6 exhibits on any visit to the museum. The building itself is quite historic and had been used as hospital during past wars. The lower Plaza remains open to the public all day and is lined with restaurants, you will often find people gathering here for art or music lessons, the second floor contains the museum, though be sure to pay for your tickets in the gift shop or you will be making an extra trip up the stairs. The third floor is used for government offices. Plan for a 1-3 hours here depending on how much time you like to spend on each place. This is a good midday activity as it will keep you in AC and out of the sun.
  • If you wish to take your time and do justice to the exhibitions schedule 2-3 hours. Very informative. Excellent displays.
  • Wonderful, historic building that hosts 6-8 different exhibitions. Entry fee is quite reasonable. Don't expect huge, detailed shows. Material is fairly limited, well organized, informative. Our guide couldn't offer much more extra. Allow cca. 1-2 hours. If you happen to be there it's worth the time. Can't say "not to be missed".
