Cathedral of San Juan Bautista, San Juan
(4.2/5 based on 1,000+ reviews on the web)
Pay a visit to one of the oldest churches in the Americas, Cathedral of San Juan Bautista. Constructed in the early 16th century, the building was restored numerous times over the centuries. The small but charming building features a 19th-century Neoclassical facade, but its main claim to fame is the tomb of Juan Ponce de Leon, Spanish explorer, conquistador, and the first governor of Puerto Rico. • We went to the Visitor's Center first, then walked along the bay next to the wall that is about 60 feet tall and about 20 feet thick. Walked past a park and entered the city through the only city gate that is left out of 6 gates. The gates were used or were closed to protect the city when Puerto Rico was being attacked by pirates and other countries. From the gate we followed the gorgeous blue cobblestone street up to the cathedral. It was a beautiful site and sight!
  • I stayed right across the street at El Convento and the history between these two places is incredible. Take time to learn about the famous square and those buried in the cathedral. The architecture is also amazing
  • Beautiful cathedral with wonderful history in Old San Juan. Wish there would have been more interpretation of the interior, but worth a stop.
  • Pretty church. Worth stopping by if you appreciate history. Decent area of town to wander around.
  • This church is one of the most important here in PR. Over here Marc Anthony got married once, so this is like a "Must Stop" for tourists.
